Are there any FIXED criteria for archiving threads... Not really.
Following are the ways a thread gets into the archives:
1) Any of the mods or admin thinks a thread deserves it (a rare event)
2) Somebody sends a mod or admin a PM, email, or ICQ message requesting a thread to be archived. As long as the person contacted doesn't think it's a stupid request, it happens. (I get a lot of requests like this)
3) Every so often, MarkG does some house cleaning on the OTF to clear up space (this happens in the other forums, but not as often) When I do house cleaning in the on topic forums I moderate, I look to see if the thread needs to be archived (yes, a judgement call) If it includes important discoveries, strategies, useful information, or is just one of those "memorable" threads, I archive it... while deleting everything that doesn't meet those standards. (very time consuming)
To the best of my knowledge, when MarkG does the OTF, he archives the threads that have a lot of responses (but not threads like the coffee shop). If a thread with less responses looks interesting, he may also archive it. However, due to the amount of threads created everyday on the OTF, he really isn't that selective because of time constraints.
