What is RIGHT About Pop-Ups & Other Ads Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

Instead of saying what's wrong with the ads and pop-ups on Apolyton, I'm going to say what's right about the pop-ups and ads on Apolyton.

First off, I very much like the relationship with Chips & Bits--I don't mind the prominent placing at all. I just ordered EU from this link. This is a prime example of advertising that is useful to me. Pretty much all of the other ads are about as useless as useless can be.

Secondly, while the ebay pop-ups really, truly, royally suck, it did get me thinking about another forum feature that has been added at other forums I frequent. It is a pop-up that informs you if you have new pm's. This seems really useful.

Put an end to popups!

GP: does this mean that I can breath the rarefied air to which Roland seems to have ready access?

Damn, this is a pretty good bottle of beer... Hopefully, you are equally well provisioned for a Friday evening at home or the office?

I think you have to spend all your time commenting about a country and never visiting it to have breathed the air or drank the Kool-Aid or whatever.

The only thing thats good about the ADS is that they keep apolyton alive.
But this is a capitalist society.Everyone from himself.
So it isnt surpising that people say to Markg that if they are blocking ads
its HIS problem.
If Apoilyton closes it will be sad .I wish I could send 2$ every month to them to keep it alive but Never had a credit card never will.

Many web sites will close.

If I was in MarkG and DANQ position i would try to reduce bandwidth costs.
I would get rid of pm ,profile, even smilies. That would reduce bandwidth considerably and would be far less annoying than these pop-ups.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

I must admit that I'm starting to feel sorry for the Ebay ad. It reminds me off this nerdy kid I knew at school, who would try and sit with the kids I hung out with. He would be silent, and as inconspicious as possible, but would eventually be noticed and given grief. Then he would slink off and spend the rest lunch in the library.

As far as I am concerned, the only businesses that resort to using cheap, meaningless, pop up ads are businesses who are having difficulty getting customers because they're bad companies to begin with.

It's like they need pop up ads to gain a lot of attention in order to off set their poor business record. Reputable companies do not need pop ads to gain customers.

All pop up ads do are antagonize customers of another site, and interrupts customer usage of the site. I come here to use Apolyton's resources - not to spend my time clicking to close a repeated pop up ad.

It would be like having a salesperson there right at your door everytime you come and leave your home. How stupid would that be in actual practice?

MrFun:

Your frustrations are noted and comprehendable, but being on the outside looking in on the online advertising market does not give you the full picture; nobody really has it, not even UGO et. al, but perhaps my comments in <A HREF=/forums/"/forums/Forum20/HTML/001390__8.html#8">this thread</A> will assist somewhat.

Guys, this isn't another thread to complain--rather, a thread for positive feedback. There are plenty of other threads here to kvetch.

"we cant find many things that would make a civer click though"

Books? Hardware & Software? Electronics? Movies? If you follow the OT, those are the kinds of things in which I'm interested. But unless they are specific, they don't get a click from me. For instance, the e-bay electronics will never get a click, because I'm interested in buying x, y, or z, not electronics in a general sense.

The EU ad got a click-through and sale because I was at Best Buy the other day and they didn't have the specific program. Even if I was paying a couple of bucks extra, it didn't bother me because of availability.

Got spare money?

Mark, Dan:

Don't let this. . uhh. . attempt at optimism discourage you from thinking that the majority of people are very very very irritated with the pop-up ads.

the other ads, who cares. i just ignore them. i don't think i've EVER clicked on a banner, and i never will. but that's irrelevant.

when the pop-ups stop. . i'll STOP using the Proximitron. Until then. . no ads at all will even appear.

It's been quite nice, browsing without those irritating pop-ups all the time. i suggest everyone else try it too.

you can find it at the address below. thank you.

I would support the editing out of the negative parts of that post. It's off topic, and doesn't belong in this thread.

connor: did you even read the thread before posting?

Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

AH: hahahaha! I could be gay if I wanted to, but what would be the point?

I'm just sick of the UGO ads, none of which I've clicked through on in my two-and-a-half years at Apolyton, and want something better. The Chips & Bits ads are infinitely more interesting (I want to see a change, get it?).

They even ship to Australia.

Mark: I like the B&N ads. You should be able to specify books, though (edit: although looking at them again, it appears that it is a "mass mailing". Might I suggest the Lord of the Rings, since the movie is coming out soon? There are other fantasy-related books that might get some sales too.
