Laptop crash with SMAC Put an end to popups!

Trying to run SMAC on laptop with WindowsXP home, 1500MHz AMD Athlon, 256MB ram, plenty of spare hd space. Got all the latest patches, including xp fix. Game runs fine, but will just lock up completely, for no obvious reason. When I load the most recent save, I can play a bit further, then it'll lock again. Haven't got very far into the game. Tried changing the forceoldvoxel line in the .ini file, but that hasen't helped. Any ideas?

Inflate your Upload Space

If you can, try and increase your ram. 256 isn't much for running XP + SMAC. You could also end a whole load of programs before playing to free some up, virus checkers and the like.

Not a very helpful fix to be fair sorry. Hopefully that might help though...

Got spare money?

Thanks, I'll give it a try. Increasing ram isn't an option, but I haven't been too careful about having other programs running at the same time. Kind of assumed Ram wouldn't be a problem on a game as old as SMAC, especially as it ran very happily on my ancient P2 233 Win 95 64MB machine.

Yeah, RAM isn't a problem for SMAC, it's winXP that has the ram problem. WinXP will eat ram very quickly, and so there may be little left for SMAC. Have you tried playing SMAC immediatly after rebooting for example?

Please bear in mind I'm purely speculating here. Could be way off the mark.
