Tired of ads?

Time to update the officers list (above) and our web-page (if I can get my balky system to function - I loaded Norton Systemworks and now it's running at about 10% of the speed it was - and I keep getting "low virtual memory" messages [how do I increase the amount of VM?] - so I'm not sure how good tripod build will be with this snail version)

Googlie, you might consider

run "msconfig"

It's a program that can disable some of the startup programs that may have been automatically set to run on startup that you don't actually need. Try disable any programs that you obviously don't need. If you're uncertain well don't touch it I guess, although I don't think you can break your computer using msconfig (don't completely trust me on that though).

The main problem I think you're having is you're using up all your ram and it's using a swap file on your harddrive. If you can reduce your memory usage by removing some of the extraneous programs it might help.

I couldn't locate the thread with Method's title, so i gave him a new honorific (see second post above) - if someone can point me to where he got a title I'll edit my post

(And thanks, Kody. I'd forgotten about msconfig. Amazing the number of old programs that loaded and took up space - like my Verizon Palm Springs internet connection stuff - not needed that for four months)

I wanna use navy rankins . As I spend 8 years in the navy.

Lieutenant Dissident for me. Although that makes it seem like a lesser rank (as army lieutenants are O1 and O-2 i believe)

And a Lt. Commander is AFAIK usually the CO of a boat, so I say we appoint Dissident a Lt. Commander of the Spartan Navy and Captain of the Invincible.

I'm wondering, is besides a huge battleship also even the tiniest craft commanded by a captain?

Btw, according to this a Captain rate is in the navy actually higher than a Lt-Commander, and equal to an army colonel.

The rank of Captain is different from the position of Captain. The commander of any craft is a captain, who can be anything in rank from a Lieutenant to a Rear Admiral. Hence Lt. Commander Dissident, Captain of the Invincible. That would make him equal to a Major, if you think that's too high a rank for a newcomer he can be a Lieutenant. The latter however is an army rank too, and Lt. Commander would help avoid confusion.

You're welcome. I myself used to glean all my knowledge on ranks from Star Trek. That made me a very confused person for a long time, since the Captain of a starship is in ST always a Captain otherwise too. A Commander is the First Officer and a Lt. Commander is only third in rank. It doesn't help that a Lt. Commander can be referred to as a Commander (the same thing as with Lt. Colonel and Colonel).

Put an end to popups!

as for command of naval vessels it depends on the size.

Aircraft carriers are always commanded by a captain rank.

But you will find small boats such as submarines commanded by lt. commanders and commanders.

And even if the captain of a boat is not a captain, they are still called aptain

aren't CRV-112 , Chiron Knights and Rolling Thunder rather Reconnaisance units than Armoured Divisions?

and there is a typo in numbers. Chiron Knights are the _2nd_ Spartan Reconnaisance.

EDIT: I read the Command Centre Thread.

I'va always had Chiron Knights as being in the 1st Division (they and R-112 CRV being the genesis of our armed forces). But I always considered the R-112 CRV to be a type of vehicle rather than the pet name for a Platoon or Brigade. It would likely be the Reconaissance Brigade of the 1st Armored Division.

But you're right as regards hi-falutin' divisional names (as we don't yet have armour)

But my thinking in suggesting a Divisional structure was that Spartan officers, sitting around and allocating responsibilities, would think big (ie, what do we want to become, rather than what are we currently)

Hence the "armoured division" structure

of course that's only my suggestion - maybe we need to thrash it out in the mess tent or via a poll

Got spare money?

I'm good with using the phrase armored division. The rovers are made of metal, which is sort of like armor...plus it just sounds cool.

And I was thinking: Do we want to make new game discussion threads for each division, or do we just want to have 1 thread for all of our military and non-combat units? Here are the threads I think we could make to compartmentalize our decision making process:

*Sparta Command HQ (for faction-wide things like social engineering, energy allocations, designing units, general discussion and strategy)
*Ministry of Base Management and Production
*Research Academy
*Ministry of Diplomacy and Propaganda
*Department of Cover Operations (we already have that thread)
*Command Nexus (used for issuing orders for all units)
***This could be further broken up by divisions

As we mature and grow in # and diversity of units, maybe we need a Units Orders thread for Maniac (or the turnplayer in his absence) to have open while playing the turn. (But I see the Command Nexus as bigger than just that - it's where we thrash out the strategy and warplanning of our faction rather than individual units' movement)

Thus those of us who "command" units could post the proposed orders there each turn such as "move rover to 61:14 thru 62:13" These decisions by the unit commander would be after general thread discussions re moving rovers south or terraforming for a farm after the forest, etc

But not all commanders have smax, do they? (how many of us actually open the game and have a look at what's what? - I generally see only 2 turn downloads - Maniac and me (sometimes 3) {but if you look back you'll see more, as I've downloaded each one twice - I had my zip set to delete the zipped file after unzipping, so I found that when i did the covert ops faction summary I didn't have any fresh turns to open to see when we got techs, etc - so I downloaded all 20 to date zipped files (and reset my unzipper to save the ziupfile)}]

Phew - that was a long convoluted sentence

Anyway - the point I was making is that sometimes Maniac has to go back and read thru six or seven posts to get a sense of what we want to do with a particular unit. I'm suggesting we put that onus on the unit commander, who gets concensus - or imposes his will - and then posts in the "orders" thread for Maniac to execute (always allowing him to vary the order in the exigencies of the situation (encounters mindworm, or Yang tank, etc)

Yeah, one of the difficulties with people like me really being able to "command" units is that we can't download the turn, so the best we can do is gather what is happening from screenshots or reports and propose that our units be moved to the S or E, or N, etc. People like me can still make general strategic suggestions, though, so we need to have a place for that too. We can put that in the unit orders thread too, or we could create a separate general strategy disccusion thread.

Speaking of these threads, when are we going to create them? Didn't we agree to leave the 2101-2120 discussion thread and start some new ones?
