Interfactional IC story - discussion thread Put an end to popups!

Okay we'll figure out rules as we go along, thread is here.
http://www.apolyton.net/forums/show...threadid=118083
If it's not too much trouble can Shanky move out any spam out of the story thread and into this thread.

People make up their own characters, and largely decide what your faction is doing. You can have mutliple characters, but I've found it gets really difficult to control more than 2 characters at a time.

I'm going to post the CMNs story thread so far in here, with periodic updates.

Note that if nobody is interested in this anymore please just say so, then I'll stop posting the story here.

Remember if you put a faction's name at the top in the "viewed by" bit of your post they may see what you're writing so trying not to leak information accidently that way.

I'm going to write about at least about the formation of the Ministry of Information.

What do the other Spartans think about the request and the co-ordinates from Pholus? I'd imagine we'll go with it, and I could write about it, is there anything specific you'd like to be involved?

Piece about our pending colonization has been written and submitted.

I think giving groups of individuals the freedom to colonize other regions fits with the Spartan ideal of self-determination. When our third base actually gets established, I was thinking of next writing about some ceremony where the Spartan Federation is founded. (Note that I referred to us as the Spartan Brotherhood at the moment.) This would promote an idea of Sparta, not as a faction dictatorially ruled by military and police control, but instead a meritocratic society, a voluntary union of semi-independent bases, where each person is free to seek his own fortune in life. Is that ok?

I'm fine with it, my idea of Sparta always was something to that effect. As long as the other bases supply troops and resources for the central government, all should be fine. Good write-ups, both of them.

I myself took the liberty of sending a Spartan expedition to the alien craft, because the story would not progress otherwise. I also put Zeiter in charge of it, since he's been writing the story before and can continue with the expedition if he so desires.

I'm thinking about writing a segment about me telling my unit our mission objectives concerning the special pholus-commissioned operation. Although I'm still trying to think of things to say. Oh well, it will come to me. I bet it would help me if I got a decent night's sleep for starters. I really need to stop staying up until 3:00 AM, like I am right now. I've heard being sleep-deprived really fries your brain, and it clouds your thinking almost as much as being drunk. I've also heard it causes you to ramble and go off on odd tangents. I'm glad I'm not to that stage yet!

It's highly subjective, it's all chemistry and some people's chemistry is slightly different than others'. I've heard of tall tales of hallucinations and borderline madness after 48+ hours of sleep deprivation, but I've managed nearly 70 hours with 4 hours of sleep beforehand with only one meal in that time (no, I'm not making this up - I did drink ridiculous amounts of water though). All I did was sit at the comp.

No hallucinations, no personality disorders or a fried noggin, although it did get really really boring. The problem is that you really don't have nothing to do with those extra hours, and you're too, well, tired to really do anything interesting or useful. I played a lot of Final Fantasy though - the newer ones don't really require too much invested thought.

It might have overloaded something though, I haven't been able to do 20+ hours since. Then again, similar rather unique circumstances have yet to occur again (solitude for several days, competitive situation, the will to do it).

I think I read somewhere that the record for longest time awake is 11 days. The record was set by a DJ who decided to stay up as long as he could as a promotional stunt or something. And he survived, so I don't think staying up a few days or so would be really harmful. The longest I've ever stayed up is 48 hours at a LAN party last year. I thought I was still rather lucid and alert after that amount of time. I was coherent enough to figure out how to hook my computer up at my house again, although I remember I tried doing some math homework afterwards, and I made it through about 4 problems before I couldn't help myself from zoning out. That's when I went to sleep.

I've also noticed that water helps when I stay up for a long time. Also, any citrus food or drink, like orange juice, seems to help.

When I go over the 24 hour mark I start getting peaks and troughs of triedness and alertness. This was something that other people I know have talked about too. The peaks and troughs seem to last about 3 hours around the 24-36 mark and get longer to about 4-6 hours after the 36 mark. I have no idea why it happens like that.

I've never really done 70 hours I think the best I've done was around 55 to 60 hours. That was only because I decided to attend lectures (no thinking required) after finishing a major project, then when I got home I wasn't tired (one of the alert periods) and parents wanted me to fix some computer problem.

I found that after 48 hours it's better to catch 2-4 hours sleep before going another 48 hours if you're trying to do work. Best I've done with catnaps inbetween was 9 days with about 12 hours of sleep spread out sporadically between those days.

This was back in the days where I thought every assignment and project was a life and death matter.

Actually the most memoriable experience wasn't the staying awake, it was the confusion after waking up. Once I had been working hard on an assignment for a couple of days and skimping on sleep, the assignment was actually due in 3 weeks, but the next two weeks were booked up with different assignments. Anyway I had finally gotten home and had the assignment completed and had a warm glow of knowing it was in 2 weeks early. I wasn't tired so I was copying files off a cd and it said 15 minutes till completion, so I decided to lie down for a little bit because my joints ached (the problem with skipping sleep and having to be mobile).

So I looked at my clock because I was waiting for that cd to complete. Then I opened my eyes wondering why it was suddenly dark. So I turned on the light, wondering why my head felt fuzzy and my eyes felt sticky. Then I looked at the clock and noticed 6 hours had gone by. So I went, oh must have dozed off for 6 hours. thought it was pretty strange because I assumed if I crashed it would have been longer than that.

So I went to the computer and the CD had finished copying, then I did stuff for about another 4 hours like finish installing the program I had started installing before I dozed, eat, brush my teeth, and then I went to check the TV guide to see what was on tonight before going off to sleep properly because I was still a bit tired. It was then that I noticed there was a serious discrepency with the tv guide and the shows that were on. So I accused my dad of leaving the old tv guide lying around again and commented that by leaving the old tv guide he had gotten my hopes up on watching a particular movie. He then told me I was looking at the wrong day since it was actually Saturaday night not Friday.

I didn't think I believe him, so I went to look at my watch (I keep it in my drawer when I'm at home) and it said Saturaday, so I sort of shrugged decided this was too weird and went back to bed. I think it was only until Sunday morning and mum came back with her purchases from the flea market that it actually sunk in that it was now Sunday.

I finally figured out I had slept for 30 hours straight. I lost an entire day and then some, I was quite upset because according to my plan I was supposed to have started my next assignment on sunday, so it felt like I didn't get to have a break between assignments.

The reason why it didn't sink in that I had slept for 30 hours straight is because my parents didn't make a single comment about the fact I was missing for 30 hours. Also the computer that I had been copying the cd off was left exactly as it was when I accidently dozed off and that was in the family area. I would have thought my parents would have turned the computer off if they noticed it running with nobody touching it for a day. Then the fact I was still tired enough to sleep normally for another 8 hours after eating and stuff. Also when I woke up my I was lying across the shorter part of the bed with my legs hanging off the side with all my clothing on. Exactly the same position that I accidently dozed off in. I also figured my parents would have put me into bed properly if they noticed me missing and saw me half lying on the bed (was still fairly young back then).

It seemed that nothing changed during the 30 hours I was conked out, and so it felt like someone had fast forwarded an entire day when I really needed that day to do something other than work before starting my preparation for a lab session on Monday.

I guess my parents didn't even realise I was back because for the last two weeks I had only been coming back home at odd hours for food and cat naps. Although my mum should have realised the last trip she made was taking me home, since I didn't have a drivers license at the time so they were the ones driving me to and from university.

Wow, sleeping for 30 hours straight!? That must have been disorienting.

I guess your brain was determined to make up for that lost sleep one way or another. And I'm pretty sure sleep just concerns the brain. Normal laying down, sitting, or generally being non-active for a length of time is all that is necessary to repair and strengthen tissues like muscles and such. But sleep is the only time that the brain gets to repair itself. When you're awake, the brain is constantly receiving new information, so it's impossible to repair itself, organize information, or make new connections. I read somewhere that most of our learning actually takes place in our sleep, when our minds take all of the information we gathered in the past day and make sense of it. So, a person could study 24 hours a day, but if they aren't resting enough, it wouldn't make much of a difference. I've experienced this firsthand. Sometimes last year at school, I would study over 3 hours a night, but I would only get 6 hours of sleep a night, and I always felt tired and kind of "out of it". And I could tell that the information wasn't really sticking like it had in the past, in middle school or elementary school when I got plenty of sleep. I think I really need to work on that this next school year, getting more sleep.

We've discovered a Battle Ogre Mk1 this turn. Should we in the IC story use the Ogre as the unit Zeiter discovers in his mission (and thus claim it has been found in the far south instead of the crater)? Or would we discover something else, eg a no longer functioning wreckage of a Progenitor ship or Gnat?

I reposted the speech to make it fit more with the timeline. I also updated the reason for going to war: it's a pre-emptive strike to defend ourselves against University imperialism!!

quote:
That is why we have chosen to go to war against the University. The Merchant Exchange has only been constructed a year ago, and already the University is flooding our markets with their cheap and decadent products. Already our Helots are being corrupted by their cultural and economic imperialism. If we don’t defend ourselves, it would only be a matter of time before we were forced to become minions of Zakharov's brutal amoral society.

Fortunately we don't have free press, so any incongruencies between the official record and the one we're giving out in The Phalanx can be explained away as "creative editing" after the game ends and the forums are made public.
