I am hurt and insulted. If this is an attempt at humour -- to vent some frustration at the ad itself, its pop-up nature etc. -- that's one thing. However, there is something else that can be read into this that is not so nice and pretty clear to see. It certainly does not have me laughing. I find this image offensive and take it as a form of a personal attack.

If we didn't have to have ads on our site, we wouldn't run them (we don't like them anymore than you), but we have to pay the bills -- server space, bandwidth etc. We don't dictate the status of the online advertising market -- we simply live its ups and downs like everybody else.

Constructive criticisms are one thing, but this doesn't help anyone or anything.

Suffering from ads?

DanQ,
Despite loving your real-audio newsletter, I have to disagree with you here. I tend to browse the forums in at least 4 windows, what means 4 ebay pop-ups, so I spend lots of time clicking the close button on it. And humor is a great way to laugh at something, for example this image made me smile here. Anyway, I will never click on the ad, I'll just X it. And the reason why I let it open, without killing it, is just becasue I don't want to kill Apolyton. However, I think that many people would pay for not seeing this ad, and the thread by MarkG shows that pretty clearly.

Gibsie,
IMO you forget one important thing. There's no reason to offend DanQ, as he is running Apolyton for free, and for his own, MarkG's and our fun. They could make it ad-free, but then everyone should pay for posting. Thus, you just have to tolerate the ads. The positives of Apolyto are much heavier than this banner.

Get a bigger avatar today!

Well, the admins know how much everyone hates the ad; people have stopped coming here as often because of it ferchrissakes. It is their site, and the ad is hurting peoples' appreciation of their hard work, they should be utterly disgusted by it. If it takes some silly thread with a silly graphic to make DanQ realisw how much the ad sicks, then it might make him try to do something about it.

I know we can all complain, but a webmaster of a site with thousands of hits a day is going to have more sway than a nobody like me.

It's funny to you because it's not an attack on you. That said, if there was something I or anyone else could do about the pop-ups then we would but, again Gibsie as I have said before, the bills have to be paid. If you really hate these ads, then go contact Ebay and ask them to stop selling these kind of ads to UGO and ask UGO to stop accepting these kinds of ads.

I visit websites too -- I may be a webmaster as well, but first and foremost I am a website visitor. I don't like pop-ups myself but I accept and understand that they are a fact of the online advertising market right now. If you can understand this, then you can understand that I and everyone else in the industry is powerless to do anything about it and will stop critcizing webmasters like myself for not changing something that we have no control over in the first place.

P.S. Again, I understand your frustrations with these ads, and your wanting to vent about them. I gave you the respect to express your feelings on a subject, and I am entitled to mine of this parody.

Inflate your Upload Space

... get off your high horse ...

First off, AH, I am not on any "high horse" -- everything I said is the truth and I don't think that I was being overdramatic.

To answer your question, yes, I did initially laugh. However, after reading the commentary around the image and actually looking at the image itself, I began to feel as though there was something else that people were getting at. It appears that I was, unfortunately, correct.

I am comforted that not everyone agrees with the arguments some have been making against Apolyton on this subject; however, I feel that there are too many who believe that we have chosen not to do something about the banner ad situation and decided that the matter needed to be clarified.

Life is short, indeed... that's why I'm trying to set the record straight now.
