AU 601 Protocol Remove this text

Hi I started reading the AU threads and realized a bit late, that eventhough I avoid reading any Greek threads. That I picked up a hint from reading Alexman Roman thread. I am at 3700 with Smellymummy.

So I'd like some guidance both for reading and writing these threads. I'd hate to have to wait until the game is over before reading other peoples DARs, at the same time we probably can't have 5 DAR threads per person, the forum would be too cluttered.

Tired of ads?

This is what I propose based on discussions in the main AU 601 thread:

Everyone gets 4 DAR threads, that can be read by players of the same side who have not yet finished their game if certain conditions are met:

  • DAR1: Read if you have the entire pangaea revealed, and you have reached the Middle Ages. The poster in this thread should not reveal the presence or location of any islands offshore of the pangaea, nor the presence of any strategic resources except iron and horses.
  • DAR2: Read if you have the entire map revealed (including ocean). You must also have knowledge of Gunpowder. This thread should not reveal the location of any Industrial or Modern age resource.
  • DAR3: Read if you have discovered refining and replaceable parts. This thread should not reveal the location of any Modern age resource.
  • DAR4: Read if you have discovered Rocketry and Fission. This thread can reveal everything.

Sounds even better

Hmmm, there must be a lot of neutral observers out there, since as of this morning there have been 124 views of Alex's 18 posts in his DAR thread

I am lurking and reading the various DARs (and probably responsible for 5 or 6 views on each DAR with 5+ replies). No time for an MP AU game (heck, almost no time for SP Civ), but I try and visit the AU forum every few days at least. Good luck and good games all

Welcome back

I think your the one person I could play this against. We could play 1 turn every 3rd Saturday Its too bad your about 2 skill levels better than I am.

Would we finish before civ4 is released?

I begged and pleaded for a SP version. However being the only who wanted it didn't help my cause much. I probably annoyed Alexman in the process (sorry bout' that).

Oh, but anyways I'll take credit for several of the "views" too.

ok, a question, it's maybe at the wrong place here, but i wouldn't know where else:

in PBEMs, when my cities grow, they sometimes immediately go into civil unrest. in SP you have 1 turn to adjust happiness, but in PBEM obviously not

the strange thing: it doesn't always happen. eg. when growing from 2 to 3 (at monarch level), they start revolting, but from 5 to 6 not, despite having more unhappy faces than happy ones. the only possible explainaition i can find:
- if your city grows and you have no happy citizens in it, then there's no adjusting time for civil unrest.

so my questions:
- do others experience the same effects?
- have you found a consistent reproduceable reason (when it happens, and when not)?
- are there any settings to change against this?

thanks

*bump*

And could any new DAR threads please have a title to reflect the civ and DAR number? For example:

AU 601: alexman's DAR 1 (Rome)

Then in the first post of the thread you can say something like:

Please do NOT read this thread of you are playing the game and:

1) You are playing as the Greeks

OR

2) You have not yet explored the entire starting land mass.

OR

3) You have not yet entered the Middle Ages.

Thanks!

Lost a long post -- I agree that we'd not finish before Civ IV ("CIV") :too bad:. An SP AU version coming soon for us SP junkies -- in the meantime we'll rack up page views on the AU 601 DARs posted by other AU denizens.

Is there a good reason for Roman players not to read Greek DARs or vice versa once we get past the relevant points in the game? Reading our own opponent's most recent DAR before the strategy information in it becomes outdated would cause problems, but offhand, I don't see any harm in knowing how other players played the other side.

No, there is no good reason, although you should still not read your opponent's DAR until you have finished your game (to avoid reading about any of his plans that might be relevant in future DARs).

btw: i'm thinking of compiling a list of links to all threads of the AU601 game (in the style of AU101) which could be topped if you guys agree to it.
every team could post their current turn year after about every 20 turns and i'd update the first post.

shall i do it or isn't it worth it?

I would put it in terms of, "Don't read any of your opponent's DARs without his or her permission." If things reach a point where the information in an early round of DARs is no longer sensitive, the players could agree to go ahead and give each other permission to read their early DARs.

If it's OK with you, I'd like to re-start. Thankfully, we are still so early in the game.

Uh, sorry... I had installed an alternative set of resource icons this week... the very stylized ones that I like... and forgot that they were pre-C3C!!!

I just checked the tile by right-clicking, and of course, tropical fruit is there.

Ummm, I think I came up with that sorta silly phrase. Early game, rather than going after enemy towns, focusing on nailing the ever present Settler and Warrior / Archer pairs. Easy targets, especially on open ground, and a huge loss for the enemy combined with two slave Workers for you.

a question on the DAR1 completion: it's unlikely that we'll know the complete continent map until navigation, because if you're at eternal war with xyz, you'll hardly get to see more of his/her core than that what you saw with initial scouting.

could one say it's enough just to know the whole continent map as far as possible (excluding the inner territory of the other human player)?

Got spare money?

crilloan, welcome!

it was apolyton's strategy forum (now split up in strat and AU) with it's genius players that made me change the view of civ3 from "good turn based strategy game, just one more turn tonight" to "wow, what strategical depth, let's just complete this era".

i recommend you look through the strategy board's "must read threads" to really feel before these gods here (note: lots of strategies may be outdated because of changes to the game through expansion packs and patches, but still good reads )

and at this place, thanks to aeson, alexman, arrian, catt, dominae, sir ralph, theseus, velociryx, vmxa1 and all the others who deserve to be in this list but shamefully have been forgotten

I come back to civ3 every 6 months
(there is no abundance with turnbased strategygames around and moo3 made me cry (did I love moo2 or what! )

I remember reading vels strategythreads when they came, that was really good reading. Ive been enjoying the AU forum, must download the mod later.

My problem when playing is that I forget to build military, then I get really pissed when my neighbours attac me
Cant they see that im building the new babylon for the good of mankind !

after that everything goes downhill...

I am really looking forward to play a singleplayer version of this map, would be fun to manage something else than a cultural victory for once.

(if I survive, that is)

Keep on mailing those turns, its good reading for those of us that dont have vacation.

The problem here is that if you read another player's DAR who has revealed portions of the map that you haven't, you get useful information for your own game that you would not otherwise have. The fact that that the revealed land belongs to your opponent would make things worse.

If you're so anxious to read the spoilers, the solution is to finish your game as fast as possible.

You might have to start posting in your own DAR2 before being able to read other players' DAR1.

You should start posting in your second DAR as soon as you discover something that would qualify as a spoiler for DAR 1. Gunpowder or an offshore island, for example.

This is my weekly plea for an SP version.

However I'm also starting to question if there should even be a SP version. I've enjoyed reading the DARS, but now I have too much advance knowledge of the map.

I don't recall ever feeling so "excluded" from an open/inclusive organization. I know it's not intentional but its pretty much how I feel at this point. Well I got to stop whining now, I'm starting to irritate myself

Yes, I think it's time for the SP version now, but I do not have the scenario file, and I do not want to see it, since I'm still playing the MP version.

So we need a volunteer to set it up. Sir Ralph has already done enough for this course, so is there anyone else who will not play the SP version and would like to create the saves (AU mod and stock, Rome and Greece, Regent through Sid = 24 saves )

Here's an idea for the SP crowd: they could try playing the existing AU 601 scenario in hotseat mode playing both Greece AND Rome. Granted, Greece and Rome would know each other's plans when they're played by the same player, but it would still provide a way to get a lot of the same experience as in a MP game. (Actually, I may try playing a hotseat AU 601 game myself once my game with Theseus reaches a point where I can do so without learning spoiler information. The trick would be making sure the hotseat game stays far enough behind the real one that I don't learn spoiler information.)
