Kiebitz is the German name for a bird species (lapwing or peewit in English). To kiebitz (verb) means in German to look somebody over his shoulder while he plays or reads, as if the mentioned Kiebitz (noun) would sit on his shoulders. Since Yiddish has lent many words from German (it is basically the German dialekt spoken by the Yewish populace since the middle ages), I think that bird is the origin for the verb to kibitz.

Probably a typo. I just got confused and mixed Jewish with Yiddish. In German, both words are spelled with a J.
