Theben appears to be unconscious in his seat overlooking the arena. It would seem the ‘excitement’ of the previous rounds of heavy defending has taken its toll on him, as it has on many of the spectators: many of them are to be found at the concession stands getting various foodstuffs and liquor- a lot of liquor, to strengthen their resolve to finish watching the fights.
Suddenly one of the guards behind Theben stiffens up. Out of thin air a young grey elf maiden appears, dressed in all black with the exception of a silver star amulet and a single green feather in her hair. Before the second guard can make a move, she points at him and utters a single word, and he falls asleep. She moves over to Theben, who is none the wiser, and starts fiddling with his cape. Then she grabs a trumpet and blows it right next to his ear, jarring him awake.
“Wha!... Huh!... Uh, FRIENDS! ROMANS! Lend me some money… err, the Games!” as he leaps forwards, “Let them…” and falls flat on his face, since his cape has been tied around his ankles. The elf giggles uncontrollably before vanishing once more.
Two more guards come racing up.
“Sir!” Shouts the 1st, in a near panic. “A riot has broken out near the food booths! The lion tamer is reading his poetry to a group of squirrels, and the commissioner of the games has been found raiding Spacius’s stash and thinks he’s a butterfly! And the guild of Healers just went on strike! Someone told them that the Carthaginians pay twice the going rate in Rome!”
“Yeah, someone even got to Skanky…” chimed the 2nd. “He’s out cold in the corner.”
“Oh, that ain’t nuthin’,” mutters the one who fell asleep, staggering back to his feet. “He’s just bloody well pissed again is all. To many rounds watching t’other players hide behind their shields in the round-robin. I’m surprised he stayed awake thorough the second round.”
“Fruggin Doc… shuiphid shielll… I couldf been a contenner…”
“One of these days, elf…”snarled Theben, “POW! ZOOM! To the Lune!”
Well don’t just stand there, morons, help me out! Control the crowd! Find the healers, or they winners won’t be in any shape for a final! Prop up Skanky in his chair, and lock the damn commissioner and the lion tamer in the main office- maybe they can entertain each other. And WHERE THE HELL ARE THE GLADIATORS!?!”
Cut to scene in training area, four men sitting around a table.
Bob: “Got any fives?”
The Ram: “Go Fish.”

“Well, that was a debacle.” Theben glared at the guards, who shuffled nervously under his icy stare, wishing they were somewhere else.
“Do… do you want us to look for the woman?”
“Forget it. She can only be found if she wants to. Hopefully she discovered a crack in the sidewalk to keep her amused for the next several hours.”
“Sir, the crowd is back in their seats, and the contestants are ready to enter the arena.”
“Thank Jupiter!! Now let’s get this party started!”
* Theben walks out over the balcony, to greets the cheers of the gathered throngs.
“Citizens of Rome! ARE YOU READY TO RRUMMBBLLEE?!?!?”
If nothing else, the excitement of the last couple of hours has got them fired up. They shout, scream, stomp, and dance around the colosseum, baying for blood.
[Howard Cosell]
“Fighting first- we have a pair of veterans. Iiiinn this corneah, the lean, the mean, the KO fightin’ machine- The RAM!!!”
*A heavily muscled man runs out, hollering at the top of his lungs. He throws his sword high in the air, and catches it returning in mid-spin. He then trips over his own sandal laces. The crowd looks forward to the excitement he’ll bring to the game.
“Facing him- the killer… the KO King… is the EQUALLY awe-inspiring, death-defying… the scarred- scathed- scrapper of scalawags- SPACIUS MAXIMUS!!!”
*A heavily-scarred brute runs out of the opposite end of the stadium, growls and shouts epithets to the crowd, while simultaneously whooping them up. A look of madness has entered the faces of his many fans- and they respond in kind.
“And- at the SAME time- iiinn this corneah, at 6’0”, weighing in at 210 lbs, is the newcomer and new leader. He can use almost any item as a weapon. Let’s hear it for: BOB!!”
*A lean, muscular man swiftly runs out into the arena. Lightly armored in a chain shirt, he carries an impressive array of weaponry: a sword, gladius, a spiked buckler, 2 javelins across his back, and a forearm-mounted single-shot crossbow. The crowd cheers as he raises his arms to them.
“Facing this awesome armada, this well-weaponed warrior, this man of many means of morto, is THE MAN- the one you all know and love- The deft, the Dastardly, the Defiant- Dealer- of- Death- The DOCTOR!!!”
*An unassuming man walks confidently out of the end opposite from Bob. He wears no armor, and carries no weapon, other than a large circular shield with razor sharp teeth on the edges. The shield looks to weigh several score of pounds, yet he carries it effortlessly in one hand. He stops in the middle of the arena, and passes his gaze over the crowds, and smiles. It is at this moment the arena explodes with a frenzy unimaginable, a wildness that sweeps over every man, woman, and child watching from above. They seem ready to tear themselves apart in a pure unadulterated blood frenzy at the thought of what this man can do, and can no longer wait.
“Ah, much better,” remarked Theben. “Signal them to begin…”

Almost at once, The Ram charges at Spacius. Spacius looks to be ready to guard the blow, but The Ram caught him off guard. A lightning jab strikes Spacius in the forearm, cutting it open.
Almost immediately, The Ram circles back, twirls, and strikes hard at Spacius’s chest, but this time he’s ready for it. A sidestep and backhanded block leaves the Ram overextended, and Spacius is able to exploit that with a quick slash at his side.
Scowling, the Ram tries once more, leaving himself wide open in the process. This time Spacius nonchalantly blocks his stroke, and swipes him across his right thigh.
Both contestants head back to their corners. As Spacius returns to his seat, he notices a very large fellow standing next to him in full armor with a large mace. He then notices that in each corner there is a similar fellow standing there. “I wonder what’s up with that?” he muses.
The Ram takes 16 damage, leaving him at 104 points, while Spacius takes 13 damage, leaving him with 107.

Bob takes a defensive position as the Doc charges at him. The Doc swings heavily with his shield, but Bob is quick enough to dodge it. Seeing an opening, Bob swings his sword with explosive reflexes and catches the Doctor as he passes by. The Doctor is not without speed himself, and what should have been a nasty cut turns into a light scrape on his shoulder.
In the next moment Bob felt himself flying through the air and rolling on the ground. Instead of stopping and regrouping, the Doctor had continued with his momentum and swung the shield around a second time, connecting solidly with Bob’s face and upper torso. Bob spit out a tooth as he quickly scrambled back to his feet, still, somewhat dizzy, anticipating a followup attack. Instead, the Doctor stuck the edge of his shield on the ground and stood unmoving- gazing back at Bob while a sly smirk crawled across his face.
The Doctor has taken 4 hp’s of damage, to have 96 remaining. Bob took 20 hp’s of damage, putting him at 80.
Ready for Round 2.
