What have we learned from the Civ-3 list? Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

Well, the civ3 suggestion list was huge and given how little civ3 is from civ2 I guess most of it still applies.

I'm wondering from the old vets what have you learned when making the original list. Was the thing far too detailed, too big, too radical or too repetitive? Anything?

Well, everyone's not going to get what they want in a new version of their favorite game, so there's only so much you can expect.

Tired of ads?

Basically nothing incredibly major got in because the game was already under production. That's what a lot of people seem to forget here.

But things said by Soren indicate that our contribution was taken notice of, and will so now too. The List is even important now, since several of the ideas from then is relevant now, f.ex. religion.

My impression is Firaxis doesn't care, but everybody had a good time.

I'm an optimist. I'd like to think they took it under advisement.

What has been learned?

Given the huge effort and the ideas that were actually included, nothing. Firaxis paid more attention to the comments from the releases of the patch after patch after patch.

Put an end to popups!

*That given the oppurtunity, individual fans will create their perfect ideal version of civ in their mind and expressed through the list and learn to expect it. Once the actual release comes out, by the sheer proliferation of ideas, hundreds of people are going to be mad because each person's specific formula for how civ should work doesnt equal the end product, even if the end product is a solid game.

The problem I see with the list is that it's simply a huge collection of wishlist items from a lot of people and not a more "organized" project. A lot of the ideas, while interesting, aren't really feasible in a Civ setting.

I think our lists are potentially a great resource for game designers. People will always say that ideas didn't get in, but this is because these boards are littered with a combonation of contradictory ideas (some contradictory ideas from the same people, sometimes!) and quaky notions.

But there are a few neat ideas out here, and systems that can certainly fuel a brainstorming session for Civilization or any other game. The fact that the people making this list genuinly care about the games we want to play means that we are ignored at the designers' loss on the one hand, but we are listened to at their peril on the other.

Take our ideas as kernels of inspirations, and with a healthy amount of salt, and no harm can come.

If one good idea is born or honed on these boards, then all of our threads and arguments were worth that time.
