I've had mech inf fortified on a mountain attacked by AI rifles before, but I've never had an AI so backward to still have spears when I have tanks.

Unfortunately I don't have a save. It was one of the first games I played and I think it was on cheiftain.
I think the game screws up sometimes because of dynamic hardware errors (itermittent errors due to heat, power supply fluctuations).
I got a tank one time from a goody hut. No-one even had gunpowder yet let alone motorized transportation.

Sorry but no way in hell should bowmen EVER be able to beat tanks. If they swarm Rifleman with huge numbers then maybe(Shaka Zulu?). But it doesn't matter, a well supplied tank battallion could probably hold off hundreds of thousands of archers.

. I've never seen the AI use a spearman to attack anything with a defense over 1.
