Holy sheesh, roth. What's going on in your game that's not in ours? (I checked 1250, and it's about the same score) That's anywhere from a 20 to 40 point (10 to 20 percent) shift in scores ... and we haven't had any major wars in ours (to decrease points) ...

Interesting to me is that the same civs are roughly the same positions in all of these -- particularly the persians. Guess that says something about starting locations ...

(Not that you can really answer this question, but still.)

Put an end to popups!

My game with Theseus has ended, at least insofar as genuine MP play is concerned. In AD 880, fifty-four Roman cavalry launched a surprise attack, striking out of the fog of war. They punched through Theseus's front lines and captured a total of four cities in the first turn of fighting. Theseus consolidated his immediately available defenders, including a Hoplite/Swordsman/MedInf army, in one city and abandoned two others in an effort to force me to go through his most heavily defended city, but in AD 890, I was able to punch through those defenses and capture that city and three others, including Athens.

By that point, with Greece far behind in technology, half its economy captured or destroyed, heavy Roman forces in the Greek core, and AI forces tying up Greece's border forces, it was clear that the game was esentially over for Theseus. I suggested that if he didn't think playing out the remainder of the war would be worth his time, he could send me his password and let me play out both sides, and he decided to take me up on my offer.

Here's the score situation in AD 890.

congratulations nathan!

4 cities in the first turn, 3 in the next. that's a really enormous cavalry storm... how many units were involved... 200?

Actually, four cities in each of the first two - "that city and three others" in the second. It was 54 cavalry; I hadn't really expected them to be able to win the war single-handed, but I caught Theseus a bit flat-footed defensively.

The only thing I can think of is that Beta and I are playing emperor level so the AI is slightly more aggressive...plus both Beta and I are being aggressive too.

As far as I can tell there haven't been any wars waged yet in our game either.

I deliberately didn't look when I realized what it was. So Beta's Greek lands are safe still...at least until I'm ready to take them from him.

Increase Your PM Length

The actual shooting war with the Greeks ended up taking a total of six turns in spite of my best efforts in my Greek persona to make Rome's job difficult. (I even went so far as to sell city improvements right and left in order to get gold to rush some extra units; how's that for desperation tactics?) The first Roman cavalry strike came in AD 880, and in AD 930, the last Greek cities fell.

Thanks, Theseus, for an interesting game, and thanks for letting me play out the rest of the fight.

Nathan

As some games are ending now, I'd like to throw out an idea for the next course:
How about an Iron Civer-esque, 4 player/No AI Tiny (or possibly small 80% water) map. There was a good enough turnout for the current course, I feel, that such a course would be possible. Any comments?

Interesting.....but how about 5 players? I think that would add an extra dimension to the diplomacy, if it isn't too slow. Tiny map too

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

i just can't to get diplomacy right and mostly end up being on the "recieving" end of an alliance. so i guess i'll pass on anything >2 human players with flexible diplomacy (fixed alliances/war would be ok again )

but as apolyton university is about perfecting your CIV playing skills and not your linguistic and convincing skills, i'm not sure that this kind of MP is right over here. maybe it should be in the regular PBEM forum

how about a completely symmetrical game? 1 against 1 plus some AI.
both have exactly the same starting location, same traits, same UU, same neighbors, no luck-influencing things like goody huts... that would definetly require civ playing skills and AI manipulation abilities...

PS: well done, alex!

I'd like to thank Nathan as well for a very very fun game... it was really my first PBEM start to finish. The set-up was great, Nathan was a true pleasure from a game mechanics and playing perspective, and he just KICKED MY *SS!!!!

I finished playing the rest of the game, winning by domination in AD 1730. I could have won a space race victory considerably sooner, but I wanted to see if I could win by domination without ever attacking a single AI city. Aside from my conquest of Greece, my domination victory is entirely a reflection of diplomatic warfare in which I arranged for the AIs to fight each other and cultural warfare, settling cities in the gaps created by AI-AI wars and flipping a few AI cities in the process.

Here are the final scores (reflecting my victory bonus):
