Not sure if this has already been addressed, but is there any info on Civ being licensed for the N-Gage platform? Will that be multi-player?
Thanks,
dl

quote: Excitingly, Raiskinen announced that Atari and Capcom would join the list of publishers developing games for the N-Gage platform. According to Pasi Polonen, who took the microphone during the proceedings, Atari would be releasing games like Driv3r and Civilization for the N-Gage. |
I remember reading a blurb about this on the news page here during E3, but no further updates to it's development. I believe the game is due out in 2005.

Read something similar too, through I think it is original Civ only.
It would be weird playing that again.
Always thought settlers looked like Viking helmets. Took me a while to spot they were supposed to be wagons.

It Nokia's porable game console/phone/mp3 player/planner/bread maker.
I never tried it, so I can't tell you much about it. It is widely hated and loathed. But, I said I never tried it, so maybe its not as bad as everyone said it is.

Yeah, I really don't like these new gadget-tastic phones and gaming consoles either. Seems kinda pointless.

Thanks for the info, peeps. I agree, I have misgivings about playing Civ I again. Ah yes, I seem to recall that chariots were preposterously overpowered...
But more to the point, I can't imagine playing it single-player mode. However, I think that even "Civ Net" was playable, because when you play against a human being, issues like graphics and sound are less important. Moreover, I had understood the primary marketing angle on the N-Gage was that since it has a cellular phone built in, it could easily offer multiplayer options.
I guess I'm just hoping that it might reach a new platform with multiplayer built in from the start. Upon further historical review, however, I'm afraid this is rather naive.

Come on Markos....this is embarrasing...this information is over 3 months old...

quote: Nokia today announced that Atari, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATAR) will develop and license games for the N-Gage platform. The first Atari titles for the N-Gage are expected to be released in 2005 and will include Civilizationý, one of the most celebrated strategy games ever created and DRIV3R(TM), the latest installment of Atari's hugely successful driving adventure franchise. Civilization and DRIV3R for the N-Gage platform will combine familiar storylines and action with N-Gage multiplayer features to create a new spin for these brands.
"Having Atari on board as a developer of N-Gage games is a superb addition to our roster, and Civilization and DRIV3R will expand the N-Gage title line-up with two blockbuster franchises," said Pasi Pýlýnen, Director, Games Publishing, Nokia. "We are looking forward to working with Atari to showcase the power of the N-Gage platform, combined with the fantastic portfolio of Atari titles."
"As one of the largest third-party publishers of interactive entertainment software, Atari has a great range of titles like Civilization and DRIV3R that can be developed for the N-Gage platform," said Wim Stocks, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Atari. "Creating mobile multiplayer features for a select number of our games is an exciting opportunity for us to give fans of Atari products the value of mobility." |
If SidGames was still around, I'd have reported it first

Well regardless of how old the initial press release was, I certainly hope that whomever is sub-contracted to design and port the game to the N-Gage platform demonstrates wisdom similar to Firaxis by coming to places such as Apolyton to engage (*cough*) the player community. I think we can all agree that on such a tiny platform, some significant compromises will have to be made. Time and time again, the members here have demonstrated their deep insight into the game and what makes it fun - just look at how many suggestions from "The List" and subsequent discussions have been incorporated into Civ III and its many upgrades and expansions. Many of us would drop $3-400 on the game console, the Civ title *and* the monthly subscription fee - but *ONLY* if it's done right.
Here's to hoping...
