Modern Paratroopers Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

I did a search on this subject before posting, but I didn't see any information regarding "air drop failed".

My situation is that I built a small army of Modern Paratroopers -- for fun, I know the cost vs benefit of this unit is questionable. I decided to deploy my paratrooper army against an enemy city against an island city after I had destroyed the two defending MI units.

Well, all four units dropped on the city were lost with the "air drop failed" message. What is the probability of losing a unit during an airdrop? I did a search on the civilopedia (what a waste of time) and the serach on Poly (much more useful regarding strategy, etc).

Solomonwi, Catt and others have posted interesting strategies about this unit which I really enjoyed reading.

Any thoughts about probabilities of "air drop failed"?

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

anytime you drop on an occupied square, or city (empty or full), you get an airdrop failed messege.

MattPilot nailed it. You've got to drop on an unoccupied square, and cities count as occupation. I've lost several paratroopers that way (mainly due to not remembering how it worked from game to game). That's also the reason you need a stealth fighter, jet fighter or helicopter for recon before you drop.

Full PM-box? Change here!

Okay...is it just me, or the supplied information very thin. I didn't realize that an unoccupied enemy city would kill my precious paratroopers

I had obliterated the enemy units with air units prior to the drops.

Well, the Marines mopped up the next turn anyway! Thanks for the responses.

I've found out (the hard way ) that paradropping onto radar towers causes your paradrop to fail. I would assume that attempting to paradrop onto other improvements, such as airfields, outposts, and colonies, would also fail, though I haven't tested it out.

Shouldn't they let paratroopers move right after they have made an air drop?

On civ2, you could move your paratrooper right after he landed, thus allowing you to use it much much more affectively.

Yea

Adding that would make the paratrooper a decent blitz or pillaging unit.

Since he could now move, he could capture a city you were just barely unable to get from normal attacks.

And, since he could still have a move left, you could land on a strategic resource and pillage it in the same turn, thus making it harder for them to reinforce unless they can remake the rr and road.

I agree. paratroopers suck as is.

What good are they? I never build them. If they can't pillage, and they can't attack, the only possible use would be to direct enemy attention away from some other place or unit.

GT, where do you come from? What special pic-searching algorithm do you live by? Are you actually a twisted AI?

Do you consider the child's action to be a or d, and what point value do you assign it?

Here's a suggestion:

Edit your paratroopers to 0 attack, 0 defence, transport only foot units, transport capacity 1, hidden nationality, unload, paradrop. And dirt cheap, no maintenance. Then use these to transport regular infantry to combat by loading inf to the para, then airdropping the unit to enemy territory, then activating the unit inside to perform the attack/pillaging/whatever. Works like that on testing, however, I'm not sure if war wearines is affected by the subsecuent, almost certain destruction/capture of the unit, if left unguarded. Or if ww can be switched of on certain units. I doubt "hidden nationality" helps, either. So don't leave it unguarded. You don't leave any 0 defence units unquarded, now do you? Think of it, as some will always hurt themselves in the jump, as guarding those poor sobs.

Think of it as giving parachutes to your regular infantries...

AI most likely don't know how to use these...
