Civ4 idea: Aging units Get a bigger avatar today!

What if the Age of a military unit affected it? Age being measured in turns.

Lets say, for example, you have a military unit that is 50 turns old. Its combat effectiveness should be affected by this via some equation someone will come up with Also, the maintence costs should affect this. The older the unit, the higher the upkeep costs.

Though this should only apply to Industrial units and modern age units.

What effect would this have on gameplay? Well, not only would you have to upgrade your units via new technology platforms, you would also have to modernize your fleet to keep it at a combat effective level.

Say for example the Jetfighter. Both the US and russia have them, though you could say the Russian jets are getting old and outdated, while the US constantly develops new jet fighters.

In civ, this could be reflected by a player who every 20-30 turns rebuilds his jetfighters and keeps them updated, while another player just lets them sit there and get old because he doesn't have the Production power in his cities to build new ones.

This would mean, even though you have the strategic resources to build certain units, it doesn't mean you can keep them up to date to match other countries.

This would also mean that countries in the late game dont run out of things to produce, and that a 'skilled' player can maintain a smaller, but more effective fighting force than say his worst enemy

So, how about this: For every turn the unit is old, you incure a 1% penalty on your Attack/defense/movement stats. If your unit is 100 turns old, you might as well throw it away. You don't see any Biplanes fighting against jetfighters these days, do you ?

So basically, you have a neverending technology tree with every unit in itself. Keep in mind, i only propose this feature to units in the industrial age and above.

I'd think experience level should go up with age.

It may be interesting to have a resource requirement as a part of unit upkeep, at least in more modern times. (for example, having continual access to aluminum and uranium to keep those nukes fresh or they may degrade in some way)

Now that I think about it we should come up with some compelling reasons to add any more complexity than necessary.

Why bother?

In civ3, you pay maintenace on ALL of your military units, including your workers. In the current scheme, you are paying for every unit you own, with the exception of settlers I think.

Anyways, the gold and city maintenance is the way in which your units are kept fresh and going. I think that this system is much more streamlined and affective then simply replacing your units.

Resource requirements does sound logical though. Considering that only one oil source and hundreds of Modern Amours and Mech Infs. seems unrealistic, not even adding the fact that don't citizens in the cities drive cars, buses, and trains to get around?

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I don't like it

50 turns. In the ancient age this is hundreds of years. Back then people could only live to about 30 years old on average.

Well...

Use your imagination...your "warrior unit" isn't just one dude with a club, he is probably a division of warriors who are symbolized by the caveman-looking-dude.

Also, I am sure that the support you pay is constantly reequiping that division with new and "fresh" troops.

Maybe it should cost more to maintain older units since it would be hard to find someone in the modern era willing to fight with just a loin cloth and a club.

I'm thinking, experience, acquired with time, to certain level. Experience above that, acquired by surviving combat, diminishes gradually to peace time level +1, to include the "proven tactics and instructors, who've actually seen combat". Upgrading resets exp level.

I disagree, since its not "the same" over that time. for example, i dont think there are many people in the 1st Infantry Division who were there 50 years ago, and I don't think they cost that much more simply because they're our first (and maybe you could say oldest) division...

Experiance?

You already get experiance from fighting battles against other units and winning. Why complicate the matter by decaying the experiance?

And if you say experiance should degrade over time, then elites could become conscripts if they did not fight very often, a very frightening propect.

uhm.. to clarify ...

I actually only ment "mechanical Units" - thats from the industrial age to the modern age.. i mentioned that, right? So no warrior

The whole point of degraded performance over time is to simulate 'new micro technology advancements.

Again, back to the jetfighter ... Both the US and Russia have some in real life, though the US fighters are more modern, thus are better. In the game this could be simulated by Russia having a old fleet of jet fighters, and the US having newer models ("rebuilt").

Or lets use WW2 Tanks for an example. Say Russia has lots of outdated T-34, but a huge number of them, and Germany always gets newer and better versions of their tanks, from Pz3 to the King Tiger. In the game this could be simulated by Russia using their old surplus units from a prior war, and Germany just building their new tanks.

Say Germany goes to war with Russia in the game. Russia's tanks are on average 30 turns old. Germany's tanks are on average 5 years old. The attack/defense values are 16/8. So given the above age of a tank, the modified value for the Russian tank is 11/6 (rounded), and the German tank is 15/8.

I would but then would be arrested, seems covering my club with a loin cloth aint making it

Seriously, I would like to see where older units mysteriously dropped dead, from old age;

Maybe even crumbled as bones became brittle unless you had access to milk for milk makes bones stronger

Actually, you can see your units drop dead. Just leave them on a swamp for a couple hundred years and sooner or later one will die from disease.
