Victoria - Empire under the Sun good or not? Put an end to popups!

Have you played it? Is it better than EU? The game seem to be quite interesting but I was really dissapointed with HoI and I dont know if it's worth to purchase Victoria.

What do you think about it?

In the begining I thought that Victoria would be a waste of money. I waited several months after Vicky was in stores before even thinking of purchasing it.

I read the boards from time to time and then patch 1.03 came out. Everyone was excited and had only good things to say about the patch. I decided to take a chance and get Victoria. I'm glad I did because this is one damn good game. Much more richer and complex than EU.

The learning curve is steep but the game definately rocks.

The ai in Vicky is definately better than the ai in HOI. It is more challenging however like EU2 and HOI there are some strategies that the human can use to win.

One thing that has impressed me about Vicky's ai is it's war making skills. For example it knows where to hit you on the frontlines to keep the pressure on. However I don't think it responds well to the humans' surprise beach landings.

Victoria is a great game, but it's been neglected by Paradox and still need patching in my opinion.

Are you sure you´re talking about HoI?
That´s the game I played most, even before EU2 and Civ2...

You should really try C.O.R.E. or Great War together with HoI and the latest patches. It´s IMO still the best game out there.

well, i played as Britain and I invaded defeated France on the highest dificukt level in ... 1940. Germans were unable to fight France back - all they units were tanks so I created many anti-tank infantry. I used also much tactical bombers to decrease their organization. computer didn't move hardly any fighters to prevent bombarding and produced still tanks, whick were destroyed easily by my infantry. They had twice as much units as I, but they were losing...

IMO AI was good in EU 1&2 but not because Paradox worked on it longer or heavier. HoI is just more complicated and computer isn't able to use all types of forces correctly...

What about patching - I havent' patched it at all, maybe this is the problem...

I'm playing the macintosh version of Victoria and find it a nice change of pace from EU2 and HoI. Not better, just a different approach to empire management re: POPs and such. I recommend it.

Paradox games become entirely different entities when you patch them. The difference between HOI 1.00 and 1.06 is absolutely immense.

That said, I've been playing my first succesful game of Victoria, and I have to say, the learning curve can be huge even with experience from EU and HOI (games I migrated to from mostly SMAC) under your belt, but once I started to understand what all those numbers meant, the game's becoming quite rewarding. Yes, read over the Vicky Wiki as mentioned in the previous post.

Read the User-created manual .

It's a differnet game, but the added complexity is a lot of fun.

Is Victoria better than EU2 you ask?

I enjoyed EU2. I enjoyed Victoria much more than EU2.

I have never downloaded a patch as I am not connected to the internet at home. Victoria was excellent 'out of the box' and IIRC the game did not crash.

Vickie is the best Paradox game as for state out of the box, but it isn't as good a game as EU2 IMHO. But you really sohlud try Vickie with the latest patch; it is many times better!

Tired of ads?

I dunno, I was pretty disappointed at Victoria out of the box.
In Fact the broken Events (Unification of Germany anyone? )
combined with the Horrible Worldmarket & overpowered countries made me so tired of it that I gifted it to a Friend.
On the Other Hand he says at 1.03 & with the Mod VIP (?) he finds it nice.

I've played victoria, and the problem I had with it is about the same as I've had with most of the previous ones, particulary HoI; It's not much fun for us that wants to run small empires. Eu and also CK, that I've just started to try out as Prince of Pskov (or as Roman, the third Prince of Pskov, Karelia and Estonia at the moment, thank you very much!) is much more flexible in that regard.

And yes, you can't really expect a paradox game to be playable out of the box. Their tradition of medicore and unstable first versions is infamous by now.

All the people I've seen commenting on the new patch, says that the last patch made it better than before.

Crusader Kings is IMHO a great game, but not as refined as EU2 and Vicky(naturally, it's not as old yet). A few days ago, Paradox opened a public testing of new patches(beta patches where people who wants to try new ideas, come with them and refine them and generally help to make the game better), so it might become better faster from now on. As I see it, it's absolutely worth the price, some people agrees with me, and some does not. It's only one way to find oujt what you will think of it really.
