According to Peter Biskind, Lucas was always unsure of his creative abilities as a filmmaker, even in his American Graffiti days, and had a very hard time controlling his set... of all the '70s American wunderkinds, Lucas is the one that had the least amount of respect from the more seasoned veterans on his productions. In the British portion of the Star Wars shoot, the costume designer would mock the movie by saying stuff like (about Chewbacca): "Where's the dog? We need the dog out here!"
Even Lucas worried about how the movie would be recieved: "I've got 10 stormtroopers shooting at 3 people from 10 feet, and nobody gets hit. Who's going to believe this shiite?"
Now we have a person who feels that he has never succeeded as an "artist" who makes in personal income, on average, $300 million a year able to make movies that depend less and less on the creative element, where he never felt comfortable, but on the technical elements, where he doesn't have to worry about the "arty" types as much as, say, Woody Allen.
I think Robert Zemeckis would make a pretty good Star Wars movie, and I wouldn't mind seeing a SW movie from James Cameron either. Who else would be good SW directors if Lucas gave up the reins?

NOO! Spielberg's latest movies have sucked something fierce. He just doesn't know when to end them. He goes just a few scenes too far and leaves the audience saying he should have ended it half an hour ago, ruining most of the film. |
Sure, the Terminal sucked, but Minority Report was great.
As for not knowing how to end movies, I can only guess you are referring to A.I, and I would have to vehemently disagree with you.

Besides, Spielberg would make SW just as Kid-oriented. I'd say that Ridley Scott or Peter Weir would be better choices. |
Weir's a cool choice, not one I would have typically associated with making a Star Wars film, but hey, I like the idea. Ridley Scott is pretty hit and miss, I personally don't think he would able to capture the imagination of the original Star Wars films. Say what you will about Spielberg being too schmaltzy, but that is something I think he would be perfect at.

Minority Report sucked, but maybe that's because he butched a short story I love. And I'm also refering to Minority Report as a movie that went on too long and you can't SERIOUSLY state that A.I. didn't go on too long. It had too many of those: it's going to end... oh wait, no it isn't.
Catch Me If You Can was ok, but nothing special (DeCaprio and Hanks made it good), and also dragged in the end.

Well he has a pretty decent record with sci-fi imagination with Blade Runner and Alien. And, besides, I'm sure Lucas will somehow still be around and exercise massive control and come up with the 'imagination'.
Btw, speaking of DeCaprio (above), remember after Titanic when it was rumored he'd be Anakin and Star Wars fanboys were say NOOOOOO, anyone but him! After seeing Christensen, and watching Leo in movies like 'Gangs of New York', I wonder if they'd be singing a different tune these days .

I know that I'm in a minority, but I think that out of the three possible places that it could have ended, I like the ending as it stands now the best. I think the scene where David and his mom jump out of the closet and surprise teddy at the end with a background of a setting sun is just one of the most beautifully sad scenes ever captured on film.
Artistically, I would probably concede that the Blue Fairy scene would probably be the best place to end it. It definitely would have been where Kubrick ended it if he were still alive.

Hey, I've always liked DiCaprio. Even though I thought Hayden was absolutely wretched in Episode II, the kid can definitely act. He was great in Life as a House. I think his main problem in Episode II was Lucas' control-freak directing, a horrid script, and constant blue-screening.

Yes, and we can only pray that they will be shot by someone other than Lucas. Lucas himself has recently said (though often giving contradictory answers) that he would never shoot 7, 8, or 9 himself (though saying in another interview that he has been toying with the idea lately ). But I'm sure Star Wars will continue someday, by someone.
Back in the day though, like before RotJ was released, he said in interviews that 7, 8, 9 would involve a minor character who was just barely seen in ESB and who would be seen slightly more in RotJ and eventually become a main character in the next trilogy. The "other" that Yoda spoke of was originally intended to be this character, eventually he scrapped the idea of a third trilogy though, and no one really knows who the mystery character was intended be, though many have speculated. |
please let it be Mara Jade! Pretty please!
Do the Thrawn trilogy!

I heard somewhere that the next movie will not be called "Episode 3", opening a possibility that another film will be made to fill in the gap.
Jar-jar betrayed the Republic by introducing the motion that gave Palpitine dictatorial powers. Obviously he must be assassinated by any serious rebel movement. Perhaps hey'll introduce the Skywalker character as Jar-jar's assassin, or maybe the up and soming Bobba Fett will get his spurs by whacking the big silly salamander.
