Pretty insane. The guy did do multiple runs and splice the best ones together, but it's still ****ing crazy.

He completed the level "We've Got Hostiles" in 20 seconds. I thought that had to be the fastest level completion in any FPS ever. That was, until he completed another level, Power Up, in 17.

I've only watched the first third of this so far. But it's unbelievable.

These people scare me.

It IS impressive, but its only single player.... once you get the hang of it, its simply a mattrer of exploiting AIs and being able to do repetitive task over and over again..

I do Doom1 and Quake1 runs. though getting record time is difficult, beating them in reasonably fast time to impress n00bs isnt that hard.

i guess these things are easier to appreciate though, cuase it doesnt take a rocket scientist to be aware of whats happening in these kind of display of skill.

i think there is a level in quake 1 which the record time is under 10 seconds maybe it was even under 5. iirc it was e2m1.

doom is really the king for speed running and i haven't seen any games come close to matching. maybe after i watch this i'll think different. i've never played half life yet... heh.

No, I mean with standard arcade settings, 2 rounds. It has to be on the hardest difficulty to work though, and it's gotta be arcade cause the computer won't go for it on the Playstation.

Shooting out that grid in mid-air then dropping down into the sewer was nice to watch or firing that arrow AND magnum shot into a marines back whilst spinning around in mid-air. It made a better movie than the quake done quick ones, because there was a decent amount of firing at enemies involved, not just a load of rocket jumps.

Zero, I haven't played the game in years, but if I remember correctly this is 1 way to get stupid fast times (though it ain't much fun really)

Xiaoyu: f+3, ff+4 (should counterhit stun), repeat as necessary, each round should take 2-3 seconds

I saw a machine that had a time of 47 seconds with Yoshi, but I never bothered to figure out how he did it.

BTW, there has been extensive speed-running done on Halo in the past few months. Players competed in each of the 10 levels for best times. They actually had to be good at fighting, because although Halo has a number of good bugs, the maps are physically very large compared to other shooters, and you often have objectives that must be completed before moving on to the next one. So the combined time is a little over 2 hours. Not quite as impressive from a speed point of view, but a lot of the runs had extremely impressive shooting.

fighting shouldnt be the focus of any speed run. You only kill when you need to.

I saw that HL speed run and I didnt understand few choices he decided to make. Seemed like he was kind of casually doing it. Like he said, time could be ALOT shorter cause he fooled around and made alot of mistakes.

I can't remember the running speed of halflife was so fast btw.. I remember it as medium running speed. That's odd (makes me wonder if I hadn't finished the game in walking mode instead of running :eek

I also had no idea that the alt fire of that railgun threw you back so violently...

Increase Your PM Length

Bunny hopping isn't possible, but IIRC you could still do that turn jump thinger (whatever it's called) where you do a tight 90 degree turn and then jump and you go much farther (I used to do it all the time in Q2). I'm pretty sure that's what he's doing.

I love the parts where he skips over large areas or even levels simply by parking or killing a scientist in a doorway that's supposed to close.

In almost every FPS engine, turn jumping or running jumping 45 degrees increases ur speed.

Tired of ads?

i've watched about a 1/3 of it(takes forever on 28.8 ) but it's fairly impressive. the only thing kinda lame is the fact he gets most of his time from doing bunny jump or long jumps which are pretty easy to do and something i'm sure the half life designers never thought possible(especially the long jumps via built up speed from bunnying). i'm always more impressed by explosive jumps of any kind because they are way harder(except for simple rocket jumps). i also haven't seen too much fighting yet which is the reason i always liked doom speed running best(100% w/ secrets in doom is great).

warning hardcore fps info ahead...

he was bunny jumping the qw way afaik. remember half life is based on the q1 engine so it's not surpising you can do that. the closest thing to qw bunnying i know of it challenge promode mode bunnying(get it at www.promode.org it's a q3 mod). ut2k3 & ut2k4 has some pretty sick bunnying too but it's wildly different as it's very hard to keep your speed up unless you have walls nearby(unless it's changed since i've last seen it).

also bunnying is possible in q2 and always has been. the reason most people could never bunny in q2 was because you need stable fps of like 120+(i'd have to check the exact number) and most pcs could never achieve that when q2 was still very competitive. another thing that stopped most q2 players from bunnying is it's so hard because q2 has bad air control(none in the older patches iirc).

the whole point of bunnying is to build speed up with each jump. if you can't turn in the air you will always run into walls unless you are very good. the whole reason bunnying works is because air friction is less than ground friction and while bunning you spend most of your time airborne. if you look at new q2 demos you'll see them bunnying and double jumping like crazy. of course since the final patch(3.20) for q2 also added minor air control it's also much easier to bunny.

ill have to rewatch the vid to pinpoint specific examples i dont have photographic memory...

and something i'm sure the half life designers never thought possible
pg i think designers intended or at least didnt care for bunnyhopping. Only game that really tried to prevent bunnyhopping is any kind of real life-like simulating kinda games like CS, firearms etc.

Interesting. You have a point about difference in friction. I'm not that familiar with how the engine calculates things, but I always though that reason why bunnyjump works in most game is due to momentum you create when you are twisting and turning in the air. In real life there would be opposite force for any force you try to create, kinda like pushing yourself in water... but in games that doesnt seem to hold true. I dunno, that seems at least to me how bunny jump works in games. And thats how swing shot with supershotgun EXACTLY works in Doom 2.... I'm not a discoverer of these thing, im just a learner and a doer.

Nah, In Thief 1&2 (and probably 3 too) you can't bunnyjump. You can do a slight superstrafejump there but you can't build up speed anyway

I do wonder how he manages to jump down huge chasms and not crashing to death (I know it's because the angle of the platform is so that he won't take damage but how does he know where exactly?).

Trial and error i guess and a lot of the time he uses ladders to drop onto too. I also wondered if you drop a long way and it starts loading the next section of the map as youre dropping down, does it take the full damage of the drop or the newly loaded section? I would guess its the latter, although its hard to see where they cut map loading sections together in the movie.
