On the original topics:
1. I don't really care on what medium a movie comes (DVD, VHS, DivX), I watch them all. It's about the movie, not the medium. Some of the best movies I saw recently happened to be on VHS (e.g. just last week I saw Cidade de Deus for the first time  )
2. I strongly detest full-screen, though if I really want to see a movie I'll accept it. But whoever invented that horrible format should be taken out and shot 
As for best movies of 2004, these are the movies I remember seeing in the cinema this year (some may be 2003 movies but were either released later in the Netherlands or I only saw them in 2004):

The Passion of the Christ
Not entirely surprisinlgy, I pretty much liked all of these movies (though Van Helsing was rather mediocre, but then again, I hadn't expected more) -- I'm pretty good at figuring out what's worth watching and what isn't beforehand. The only exception here is The Passion of the Christ, which is quite possibly The Worst Movie Ever. In fact, giving that one the title 'movie' is giving it too much credit IMNSHO. Then again, I knew that before I went there (I only went there to do someone else a favour who didn't want to go there alone but couldn't find anyone who wanted to go -- afterwards she understood why  )
I'm very much looking forward to seeing Fahrenheit 9/11 next week, and in the long run Shark Tale and The Bourne Supremacy.

Cidade De Deus -- Saw it just last week: brilliant movie, a bit like a Latino Godfather, only different I actually don't know why I didn't see this in the cinema, I probably just never noticed it (if it ever ran in my local cinema at all, until recently they weren't great with 'small' movies).
Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain -- I never even heard of this one until I saw it, and I actually didn't intend to get it but I got the wrong tape when renting something else. It completely took me by surprise, this movie is definitely in my personal top 10 of best movies of all times Afterwards when I asked others about it it turned out pretty much every movie buff I know had already seen it (and loved it) but apparently just never gotten around to mentioning it to me 
IMO getting the wrong tape is actually one of the best things that can happen when renting movies -- I like to be taken by surprise from time to time (though if it's a bad movie I'll still want my money back  )
Shaolin Soccer -- I actually got the DVD for this one while on vacation in Asia (yes it was a *legal* DVD, at least as far as I could tell  ), about a year before it came out in European (and American) cinemas. Hilarious movie I considered seeing it again when it came out in the cinemas here but in the end I was too busy with other things and was low on cash.
Mystic River -- I had read only 1 review about this movie when it came out in cinemas and it was a bad review (probably the only bad review this movie ever got too  ). After it went out of rotation, I started reading good reviews and in the end it proved to be one of the best movies of 2003 Incidentally, this movie also marked the last time I ever relied on press reviews to judge a movie (except for Jonathan Ross reviews) 
Cruel Intentions -- I thought this was your typical chick-flick (what with winning the MTV award for Best Kiss and almost the entire cast being female and all), but I couldn't have been more wrong. Well, it probably was still a chick flick, but one that men can (thoroughly) enjoy as well. Oh, and that MTV award for Best Kiss? That was well-deserved

Yes, Kucinich, there was a time when there were plenty of local mom&pop video stores around who would rent you the things for $1 for 3 days, maybe going to $2 for new releases. What really killed the places, imho, was not Blockbuster (they've never beaten the locals on prices) but the advent of the DVD. All these small places had great selections of a clearly second-rate technology, and people quickly switched over - IIRC, at one time people were trumpeting that the DVD was the quickest-accepted new consumer product in history*. And while the small stores quickly switched over to DVD on their new releases, they still had a massive stock of quickly aging merchandise.
Also, DVD pricing didn't help either. For the past 5+ years there has been a pricing controversy between Wal-Mart and Blockbuster Video. BBV was helped in the VHS days by the typically high price for the tapes - usually new releases were priced in the $40-100 range, slowly coming down in price over the years. However when DVD's came out, Wal-Mart, using their newly found ability to play 800 pound gorilla wanting a seat, demanded that DVD's be priced to sell, including new releases. At first, BBV thought that, since they were already the leading home distribution outlet for films, they would be able to handle the upstart Wal-Mart at a time of their choosing. Alas, this didn't happen as DVD's soared in popularity, and Wal-Mart came to dominate the home movie market on a scale not even dreamed of by BBV - iirc, 1 of every 5 DVD sales occur at Wal-Mart or Sams Club, in contrast to BBV's hold of 8% of the DVD sales market.
The studios are unwilling to go with the higher pricing model anymore either, as they are now counting on the tens, hundreds of millions earned from DVD sales to put their films in the black. I'm pretty sure that Spider-Man 2, a film that has yet to earn back it's $250,000,000 price tag, was financed to the amount it was because the studio had an eye towards DVD sales as a means to offset the total cost of the film.
*Now the iPod people might make the same claim...

yes, they had way more movies than all 4 local HVs and BBs (just VHS, like JohnT said)
It's still $2 (well, was last year), I just no longer live there (nor visit)

-I rent VHS if they are out of DVD. Sometimes, for movies that are out for a while I try to get the VHS. Nothing is worse than getting home, got the popcorn popped, and settle down in front of the TV with the sweetie and my wife to watch a movie only to find that the idiots who rented the DVD before you had some stupid kid that thought the DVD was a coaster, or even worse, an art medium for finger paints.
-My wife hates widescreen. She agrees that if we had a bigger TV (we have a 27inch) or a letterbox TV than it would be fine. I don't mind, but Last of the Mohicians looks awful on widescreen. All movies should come with the choice.
-Never used netflix, probably never will. Going to the video store is fun, half the time I end up renting something I never would of otherwised only to find out it wasn't that bad; i.e. The Peacemaker.
-Groundhog day is a romantic comedy, but is probably the most manly of all of them.
-I haven't really seen a whole lot of movies at the theater this year. The last movie I saw was Hellboy, and before that Big Fish... I normally rent as wifey and I don't feel the need to drop $40/movie (most have my popcorn!!!)...
However, I really want to see Spiderman 2 on the big screen.
