Yeah, he could. He turned up at the department one day with a black eye, so the man does fight.

And the best he could do is a degree in philosophy?

That's either a total waste of a great mind, or he's only great when compared among the lesser men of his field.

He's had plenty of other stuff. This is the Companion award, not the ordinary OoC. Only two people were named this year.

I think he was also the first English speaking academic nominated to the College de France.

Who are these people KH?

I have a list of the Companions of the Order of Canada and there are 412, not including the latest two nominees. There are many eminent Canadians I recognize on there.

Are you sure you didn't mean the plain vanilla Order of Canada?

1. I have hypochromia, or maybe it's hyperchromia, I forget which is which -- whichever is the one where my eyes keep losing pigment. This could be indicative of some terrible terrible illness, or it could be indicative of nothing. Since this has been going on for about twenty-odd years, I'm assuming it's the latter, but if my brain explodes tomorrow, then I'm blaming Skanky.

2. I've got a Frankenstein scar on my forehead from accidentally walking into a tree about eight years ago. Somewhere my brother still has the picture he took of me when the stitches were fresh.

3. Speaking of my brother, I managed to drop the rings at his wedding when the priest asked for them. It's partially the priest's fault, though, since he had a pirate hook instead of a hand, and it's tough to get the rings on a hook like that when you're suffering from sweaty palms.

D. I'm using a letter instead of a number here in a sad attempt at humor. Or humour. Or dumbassery. Whatever.

5. I like liver and onions, but it's tough to find a diner that serves the stuff anymore. Apparently it's considered "old-people" food, and many times I can only order it off of the senior's menu.

In fact, if that "highest division" of the Order of Canada were given based solely on intelligence, then everybody with an IQ of about 140 or over would have one.

FYI, the average IQ of a faculty member in physics is 140.

So nyah, nyah I'm smarter than everybody.

That's not unreasonable for the country's highest order.

In New Zealand we only have a population of just over three million and the Order of New Zealand is capped at twenty living members. There are a couple of ex PMs and people like Ed Hillary and Kiri Te Kanawa on ours. There are a lot more famous Canadians.

Of course there are lower orders (Knights, public service awards) and lots of people have those.

But putting in two a year doesn't seem out of place.

Obviously not you.

But then again, I doubt that the people who do care give a rat's ass about your opinion. Every country I can think of has awards like these. Sometimes they are silly (like the ones that tyrants award themselves), most of the time they are a way of recognizing people who have made a contribution.

Suffering from ads?

I realize what they are for, thanks.

I'm just casually pointing out that the only people who really care about them are those that are appointed, or those that bend over for those appointed.

Tired of ads?

I'm saying it's true for most people.

People in academia don't count -- we're talking real world here.

Hell, the title of "IBM Fellow" is more prestigious than the Champion of the Order of Canada in terms of people with the title versus those eligable, and I work with two every day. And I guarantee you they make a helluva lot more than most people in the Order of Canada, too.
