All I know is that Morgans/Peacekeepers name are horriable!!! Morgan this, U.N. that ... makes you sick.
I would say a tie between Univeristy and Gaians.

Yeah, I'd have to go with the Gaians and the Angels as well.
Personally, though, I think the Cybernetic base names are completely uninspired. They're all [Letter from Greek alphabet] [Kind of terrain]. I think perhaps the Firaxis staff tackled the Cybernetic names last and were running out of base name creativity by then.

I don't really like the standard names although some of the Pirates are good. In PBEMs I will often name my own bases. It can actually be great fun naming bases and landmarks when in a war with another human ( assuming you both see the humor in it). In one game we even got into naming our units with little jibes at each other

It matters not to me. When I play, I name all my bases:
Enigma's Conception
Enigma's Vision
Enigma's Judgement
Enigma's Theory
Enigma's Wisdom
etc.

Often I name bases based on their strategic area.
For example, the first base I capture from the enemy in his main territory that will allow me to finally easily transfer troops to land and fight from land, would be called "Foothold Base" or something.
I often build a base across an isthmus, so ships can pass through, so I call it "West Sea Gate" or "Isthmus Passage" or something like that.

I don't think this was a lack of creativity on the part of Firaxis. I think the names are SUPPOSED to be boring. They are purely functional, like "7 of 9" as a Borg name.

Usually I am unoriginal and leave base names as they are. But some bases I have a little fun. In one case I had probed a base into my faction that it soon became apparent I could not hold. I quickly renamed it as "Flubber's Folly".
Sometimes with certain players, you can have a bit of fun. In one PBEM I had been patrolling vigorously looking for a treatymates probeships. Once I found them off my coast , I renamed the nearest base as "Secret Agent Convention" (I had several of my own probes there as defenders) and then went further by naming a landmark with a big arrow pointing to my base with advertisments. But you have to know your opponent to do that. Some folks may not appreciate the commentary
Ohand my most boring convention is a way to group bases-- My safe inland bases might get a designation like "AA" before the rest of their name, Coastal bases get another designation and any base on other significant continets gets another- Its just a simple way to group bases when flipping between bases using the arrow keys

I rename bases only under one circumstance. If the AI captures and renames a base I will restore the original name when I recapture it.

I have never seen the AI rename a base. Have you?

I've had them rename immediately upon capture. I thought it might have something to do with the dead assistant sequence you get if you have interludes turned on and lose your first built mindworm.

It would either be Gaians or Spartans out of the SMAC factions. Base names like 'Last Rose of Summer', 'Vale of Winds' and 'Dreams of Green' sum up Dierdre's attitudes perfectly. Base names like 'Fort Legion', 'Hero's Waypoint' and 'Defiance Freehold' sum up the militaristic attitudes of those within quite well.
Award for worst would be Peacekeepers and Morganites. Peacekeepers I can forgive seeing as how bureaucrats tend to lack that kind of imagination anyway, but surely Morgan can afford to hire more imaginative people in the naming department.
I have no opinion about the SMAX ones since I never managed to find it before it disappeared from the shelves like it was never there.
In terms of my own naming conventions for both bases and units, I might sometimes use names and landmarks from the Dune universe. Sometimes I might use the names of historical figures for bases, and names of historical military units for my units, which best fit the faction I'm using. Other times, I just try to come up with more imaginative names that fit the ideology of the faction (easy enough with Peacekeepers and Morganites. Near impossible with the Gaians seeing as how they already have excellent names)

Shouldn't the Believers be part of this as well, then? I mean, let's face it, every single base name is inspired by the Bible, signifying very clearly what Miriam's minions stand for.

Yes, I forgot about them. I can't believe I let my bias cloud another obvious winner. I mean, I may love to hate the faction and it's ideology, but base names like 'Children of God', 'Judgement Seat' and 'The Lord's Chosen' really do fit the profile of sanctimonious, self-righteous zealots with delusions of superiority just as much as the poetic names of the Gaian bases and the militaristic names of the Spartan bases match their respective factions.
I guess I can count the Hive as well. Most of their base names suit the communist utopia of Yang's twisted mind.
All are good then except for the Morganites and Peacekeepers.
