From BBC Shropshire.
quote: The calendar of saints brings us a reminder of the rich heritage of martyrs, hermits, bishops and popes who have illuminated our history, and given us many opportunities to celebrate during the course of a year
One much loved in Coalbrookdale is the illustrious St. Beard, whose history has been chronicled by the renowned historian and landlord of the Coalbrookdale Inn, Michael Fielding.
In fact Michael has made it his life’s work to ensure that the worthy saint, although completely ignored in the rest of the world, is loyally feasted on the second Thursday in January every year in Coalbrookdale.
In this joyous jubilee of the hirsute, the panoply of bewhiskered men – and indeed women, for the followers of St. Beard see no need to discriminate – gathered to witness the annual election of the Prince of Beards.
At the appointed hour (that is … when Mike Fielding said…) the proud prince was chosen, one Peter Harris.
Peter is a regular visitor to the Coalbrookdale Inn and usually arrives on a cycle.
That night, however, perhaps he had had some revelation of the honour to be bestowed upon him, or perhaps it was because the weather was a bit on the cold side, he came by taxi.
Peter donned the traditional robe and crown and took a ceremonial turn around the pub. He was then obliged to partake of the traditional St Beard’s Feast … meatballs and spaghetti, to be eaten without the use of a knife, fork or fingers. Although slightly perplexed he entered into the spirit of the occasion and only ended up with a little sauce on his face!
It was an excellent evening and is now a firmly established tradition at the Coalbrookdale. Mike and Corinne Fielding, who run the pub are now getting ready for the next event in their busy schedule … Burns Night.
In fact Mike may be out already, trapping the wild haggi on the slopes of Jiggers Bank. |
Is this the future you really want?
