Do I Dare Play Civ III Get a bigger avatar today!

It's been about 3 weeks since I last played Civ III, because my video card seems like it is going out. It will be a couple more weeks until I can get a new card. The problem is I am going through major Civ withdrawl. My question is, will playing Civ III cause it to go out faster or is it going to go out when it does no matter what I am doing with my computer?

C3 shouldn't be too much of a strain on your video card...

If it's really a problem, play C2 or SMAC until you get the new card.

As long as you have power to the card you are probably at the same risk, regardless of what you play.

These issues (hardware failures) are among the reason I keep one of my old PC's.

Most electronics fail at the moment of turning them on, so I don't think it would make a big difference.

Full PM-box? Change here!

I can't see how civ would damage any video card.

Last week my hard disk crashed (oooops, 2000 foto's and 8 years of my documents gone)
I tried to fix it by putting it into my 2nd compute (the one my wife's mostly using) and toasted that computer for some reason as well (do I suck or not?)

Oh well, so at that moment we got 2 broken computes in house. But no worries, I had a 3rd one, my server

That's the one I'm posing from right now.
Always keep 2 computes in reserve! One day you'll need them.

Try putting your HD in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer for a couple of hours. With any luck, it will work long enough to copy the data.
Yeah, I'm not kidding, this could actually work, the one thing you have to be carefull with is condensed water, so leave the bag on when you hook it up.

Thats gotta be one of the oddest things I've heard. I'd hate to add to the oddness here but placing a slice of bread in the plastic bag before sealing it will help with the condensation problem (and rest the drive on a cloth when you hook it up. You don't want any moisture to complete a circuit to your chassis. )

Eh, that's the first I've heard of a harddisk in a freezer....care to offer a decent explanation as to why this should have an effect on a dead/damaged harddisk?

Never heard of it myself, but the first thing that pops to mind is that if the problem is a damaged platter, similar to a scratch on a CD, lowering the temperature may contract the disk enough to make the data readable, effectively drawing the "scratches" closed. Obviously, that would only work until the disk warmed up, but it may be long enough for a "rescue" operation. I'm sure there are problems with this explanation, but as I said, it's the first thing that came to mind.

I thought it was something more along the lines of the hard disk sitting there, very cold and lonely, looking at frozen hamburger and chicken breasts, and realizing that if if does NOT get its act together, it could be next on the barbeque.

In that case substitute the slice of bread in my last suggestion for a hamburger bun.
