Just send whoever wins the NBA championship. At least they would already be a team with a coach they know.

The irony is that Team USA's coach is the the coach of the defending NBA champs, the Detroit Pistons.

A couple of Pistons were invited to play, but they declined. They would have shored up the team's most obvious weaknesses, jump-shooting (Rip Hamilton) and interior defense (Ben Wallace).

Well we still got something. But I saw this quote in an article on AOL:

quote:
Strange stuff, but not quite as weird as the Americans dropping three games after they had lost only two in the previous 68 years. It's the first time since pro players were added for the 1992 Dream Team that the United States is going home without gold.

Holy **** is that true?! Did the USA basketball really only loose 2 games in 68 years? That's insane! That can't be true.

They have lost 2 games since allowing professional players.

Before that the US got silver in 1988 and I believe 1976

Both times losing to the Russians

No, they had only lost two games total in Olympic play up until this year, with amateurs and pros. College players lost twice to the Russians, in 1972 and 1988. Pros had never lost a game in the Olympics, until this year.

We lost 3 this year...

And if you're talking about games played by pros outside the Olympics, we lost 3 at the World Championships in Indianapolis in addition to the two losses in warmups this year. So it's 5 losses outside Olympic competition and now 3 in Olympic competition.

That is just remarkable. So in 68 years the US got 14 golds, 2 silvers and 1 bronze? And only lost 5 games total? That is amazing. Has there ever been such a dominant streak in any Olympic sport by any country?

Well we were talking about games up until this loss, in the Olympics, using professional players.

Which was 2 losses.

Sort of. The medal counts might be wrong. Number of losses are right, though.

if i correctly recall the medal counts for USA in basketball is: 12 gold, 1 silver (1972) and 2 bronzes (1988 and 2004).
The other gold winners are: USSR 1972 and 1988, Yugoslavia 1980 and Argentina 2004.

Z has chronic foot problems plus I think he is coming up on a contract year. Now that the US has lost, perhaps they will change the way they pick teams. I think the US might have won Gold if they had substituted Bruce Bowen and Brent Barry for Emeka Okafor and Carmelo Anthony. The real collapse was Serbia Montenegro. They have some major dissension problems between the players and coach. I am sure that is why Vlade Divac and Peja Stojakovic were not on the team and why they finished so badly.

pchang, I agree with you completely

The US still could have won the gold easily

And I also was totally surprised by the fascists Serbs collapsing

Regarding Z, I thought his foot problems, were solved, and that he had already been traded. Guess I was wrong.

That can't be right if we only lost twice. I think that Yugoslavia one is wrong.
