What's A Good Tequila For Aging? Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

A few years back, my brother went to Mexico, and came back with an expensive tequila (a Souza, I think) that tasted more like a fine Cognac than any of the cactus juice I've tried before.

He's now interested in trying to age his own, and I've decided to provide him with the "starter material" as a combined Birthday/Christmas gift.

So I'm looking for an inxpensive yet good quality tequila that will be spending the next two to five years in close contact with French Oak.

I need to get roughly twenty liters, as that's the size of the cask I got him last Christmas.

I don't know anything about Tequila, but French Oak (or pretty much any brand of wood) is the best way to ruin the actual taste of the product, and to infuse only the taste of oak instead.

Enough of our wines are ruined by Oak, please don't ruin a good Tequila with it.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Not when distilled spirits are involved -- in that case, wood is what smooths the sandpaper.

Hmmmm... I didn't know you could do that with tequila. Patron tastes good right out of the bottle, but it's expensive.

Enter the AD-FREE zone

It is easier, and likely cheaper (considering process and carrying costs) to buy aged tequilas: reposadas and anejos

Why would you want to age tequila?

If you're letting it age, you're not drinking it

Increase Your PM Length

Drink that stuff on a daily basis and in a sufficient quantity and I'll guarentee you that you will age remarkably rapidly.

Jose is some of the worst stuff you can buy. Stick with 100% Blue agave and you'll be a happier man.

Golds and silvers (Cuervo or other makes) are by definition 100% blue agave. (and are the same stuff except for the color.)

So I should be fine picking any silver (golds have "extras" that make them Margarita-friendly, I hear)?

Okay, that simplifies matters -- thanks, guys!

Probably, but he really wants to try this, and I'm interested in seeing the results myself.
