Chapter 2 - One day pontificate
Pope Alexander VI appointed his son Cesare as Archbishop of Valencia and his vicar. He also appointed Girolamo Savonarola, a bitter enemy of the Medici as cardinal. Then he convoked the conclave to decide on the issue of the murder of Cardinal Giulio de Medici.
Giovanni de Medici spoke first.
“It is obvious that the murderer is an enemy of the Medici. I demand justice!”
“I concur, but do we know who did it?” replied Cardinal Wolsey.
“The Medicis suspect their archenemy, evil Giovanni Sforza. He must be tried before the cardinals and sentenced to death!”
“Let us vote on the issue”, suggested Cardinal Farnese.
“Yes, let the majority of the cardinals decide”, concluded Alexander VI.
Then he whispered to his son.
“Cesare, spread the word among our cardinals I want Sforza dead. Then I won’t need to give him Lucrezia and I can use her for something else, maybe even for the marriage with the Holy Roman Emperor.”
The cardinals voted overwhelmingly in favour of Giovanni de Medici’s proposal and Spaced Cowboy was taken before the cardinals, found guilty and executed the same day.

Later that day Alexander VI invited Niccolò Machiavelli.
“Mr. Machiavelli, you are the brightest mind in all of Italy. I am not entirely satisfied with the conviction of Duke Sforza and I fear the killer was not found. So I appoint you extraordinary and plenipotentiary chief investigator in this matter. You will report to my son Cesare on your finds.”
“Yes, Your Holiness.”
Machiavelli left.
Then Alexander explained his plan to his son Cesare.
“I want Giuliano Della Rovere out of the picture. Only when he is dead will my pontificate be secured. You will kill him. But we must make it look like the one who killed Giulio de Medici did it. We must frame the guy. We’ll accuse him of that murder too and under torture, he’ll confess.”
“Got it pa.”

The next morning Lucrezia went to bring a cup of tea with milk to her father, but he wasn’t in his bedroom. She alerted the guards and they went searching for him. Inside the cathedral, the guards found rah dead, lying face down on the altar. The murderer has bashed his head in with the corner of a picture frame. The white marble altar was covered in blood. The sun light coming through the murals in the ceiling made the colour of blood appear crimson, even purple. Niccolò Machiavelli was quickly summoned to the murder scene.
“All this blood. It couldn’t have come just from this head wound.”
The guards turned the Pope’s body. He was cut open with some kind of a big knife and his internal organs were removed.
Machiavelli made a last comment.
“Obviously the work of a second murderer. This mystery is going to take some time to solve.”
