Chapter 4 - Pontifice Terrible
Upon returning from Florence, Girolamo Savonarola met with Cesare Borgia.
“My mission to Florence was a great success. Piero de Medici is overthrown and I rule in Florence now”, Girolamo Savonarola was jubilant. “So, what happened in Rome while I was away?”
“Nothing special”, Cesare Borgia replied, “except that Giuliano Della Rovere is now Pope and I am as good as dead.”
“Surely, something can be done about it.”
“I’ll be damned if I don’t try. It’s him or me now.”

The cardinals later met to decide on the small issue of the death of one of the artists. They found it to be a classic case of artists’ jealousy and sentenced Adagio to death.
Pope Julius II formerly known as Giuliano Della Rovere also appointed Piero de Medici as new cardinal.

Martin Luther was given the opportunity for an audience with the Pope.
Pope Julius II started.
“My son. You are summoned here to defend your ideas some of the cardinals consider heretical. Some of them are urging me to exorcise those ideas out of you using torture.”
“Your Holiness, I have the right to stand trial if it comes to that and defend my views.”
“Sure you have, but it doesn’t have to come to that. I have chosen another path. As I am generally uninterested in the religious disputes and theology, I solve these problems with the help of simony.”
The Pope paused. Then he continued.
“If you don’t speak about your reforms of the Roman Catholic Church any more, I am willing to appoint you cardinal. Think about it. You are young. One of the cardinals gets elected. You stand a good chance of becoming the Pope one day.”
Thus a new alliance was formed and Martin Luther became cardinal.

In the morning the guards discovered Ben Kenobi dead on the altar of St. George’s cathedral, lying face down. Again, his head was bashed in using the corner of a picture frame and his internal organs were removed. Niccolò Machiavelli examined the body carefully.
“Hmm, again a very large knife was used to inflict the deep cut. But what is this?”
Machiavelli found a piece of cloth in the right hand of the Pope. It was a piece of cardinal’s robe. The Pope must have torn it during the struggle with his attacker.
“It appears a cardinal did this. The only problem is there are 23 of them and I can’t indict them all”, Machiavelli whispered but nobody heard him. Fortunately for him.

Well, at least I know Skanky Burns as Michaelangelo did not kill me off.
But what about the second mafia?
Who would he be?
Obviously I was getting too close to the truth.
Please, save your lives and find the Mafia.
And typical, that my aid and assistance to outsider Martin Luther results in my death.

Chapter 5 - Death to the heretic!
Tired of the political struggles between the Borgias and the Medicis, the cardinals elected Francesco Todeschini Piccolomini as new Pope. He chose the name Pius III.
Shortly afterwards, Niccolò Machiavelli met with the Pope.
“Your Holiness, the investigation I have conducted so far indicates we’re dealing with two murderers. Two multiple murderers. Furthermore, the evidence gathered at the last crime scene strongly incriminates one of the cardinals.”
“Mr. Machiavelli, you know I would like nothing more than to catch the killer who has murdered so many of our friends over the last week. Not a day has passed that I haven’t prayed to the Lord to stop the killings. And you are telling me now there are two killers in fact. I do not contest that. But to accuse the cardinals without sufficient proof. I think it would be impossible.”
“I don’t want to accuse all cardinals, Your Holiness. Please, take a look at this.”
Machiavelli handed over the piece of cardinal’s robe to the Pope.
“What is this?”
“It’s a piece of cardinal’s robe, Your Holiness. We found this piece of cloth in the right hand of Pope Julius II. He must have torn it off during the struggle with his attacker.”
“So, what’s your plan?”
“You can invite me to attend the next session of the conclave and I’ll watch closely to see if the robe of one of the cardinals has a piece missing or if some of the cardinals aren’t wearing their robes. If I don’t spot the culprit then, I can, with your permission, later search the quarters of those cardinals who hadn’t been wearing their robes.”
“All right, we’ll do that way. The killer must be found.”
****
The conclave convened to decide on the matter of the death of Pope Julius II. Machiavelli was present and watching closely as agreed. He spotted that Cardinal Martin Luther’s robe has a piece missing. He spoke out.
“It’s Cardinal Martin Luther! He is the killer of the popes!”
“What are you talking about?” Martin Luther was puzzled.
Machiavelli approached the cardinal and compared the piece he had with the hole in cardinal’s robe. It matched.
Cardinal Thomas Wolsey spoke.
“I have always detested heretics. I thought it was Julius’ mistake that he has appointed you cardinal. Now is time to correct this mistake.”
“But I am innocent”, protested Luther.
“Die heathen swine”, Alessandro Farnese exclaimed “and with your death show to the world how the Roman Catholic Church deals with heretics and murderers.”
“I have been framed!” cried Luther.
“Prepare the stake”, Giovanni de Medici was eager.
And Whoha was burnt at stake a few hours later.
Rome breathed a sigh of relief, but it would prove to be a short lived one. For the next morning the guards found reismark dead in his villa on the outskirts of Rome. He was lying face down in the great hall of the Borgia mansion, next to the Roman sarcophagus engraved with images of the centaurs, ancient Roman gods and other mythical figures.
This time the murderer obviously didn’t know the victim as he was struck from behind, stabbed in the back.
