The "retention" rate on the unemployment rolls was incredible as there were people that would be on there year after year after year. It became institutionalized. The funniest example was when a full time year round job came up in a very small community that had something like a 70% unemployment rate. They had ZERO applications.

There could be all kinds of reasons why they recieved no applications. The idea that no one in that town want's to work is incredible. In fact, it's incredible that there were no applications filed. Both of us should know, as people who have been in the job market, that there are plenty of people looking for work. Only in cases where the unemployment rate is very low and the wage also very low will employers have trouble finding employees. The following is a general rule in capitalism; Jobs

I can't fix that I guess.

How about this. There are less jobs than employees.

True, but I'm sure your dad would say that families should assist each other if the need arises.

I wonder, since my dad went to law school at a public university (UVA) would you count that as support from the state?

No, but you raise an interesting question, given the fact that his tuition will not cover the costs of his education.

Loans I think would be different.

My experience came in two kinds of places. One was tiny communities where there were not enough jobs. There would be two major employers

1. a fish plant that would be open a few weeks
2. Government make work

Unemployment rates in those places was usually above 50% but the system made it economic for people to stay in the small communities.

The second type was in the larger Canadian towns. Those were the places where I never found a problem getting a job. Got it now ?

ME--

This was in a tiny community where the entire work force was probably something like 100 people. The reality was that people were comfortable with the system . They knew that a combination of the fishery and make work would get them all qualified for unemployment insurance . My brother-in-law was a teacher there and he spoke to a few people asking why they didn't apply. The reasons for the men were usually something about not wanting to spoil their hunting plans or their snowmobile excursion. The women had reasons basically relating to not wanting to upset a very settled lifestyle ( have time to cook supper every day, interfere with planned trip, Grandma coming to visit)

Here you always can fire someone (exception for union environments), its just that you might have to give them some pay in lieu of notice. If you have cause, you owe them nothing.

IN a union environmnet it can almost become impossible to get rid of a bad employee . When I worked retail I saw some stark examples of this. JUst awful employees who had seniority and worked the rules.

You have continually misrepresented me on this issue, and several people have complained. You seem to be taking a page out of Hitlers theory on propaganda.

And I could say that I find it funny that someone who advocates individualism is so high on family control over the individual.

I'm not claiming he's against other people giving such support. I'm saying that individualism can and does preclude that support. Since not everyone is individualist, or individualist to the same degree, this obviously does not mean that there is NO such support.

2.I said nothing about my views on family.

Many of the women took on traditional housewives roles while the men tended to cut wood (for home heating or sale, hunt, fish, trap, maintain a small vegetable garden. Also, families tended to be large LOL. I wasn't in that particular community much but I lived in a slightly larger one . .. the "underground" economy was huge. Lots of unreported income (the guy cutting and selling wood or the ones engaged as commercial fishermen but paid cash)

What the hell are you talking about?

I have posted in this thread a bunch of times, mainly because I grew up in an area of "high unemployment" and saw the effects of institutionalized government dependency. It wasn't pretty. When you see a 21 year old tell you he's "on UI" and he doesn't seem predisposed to do anything about it. When you have a cousin explain to you how a full time courseload is misguided since you can collect UI if you go part-time. When a person won't move away from an area of higher unemployment because then they would need more weeks of work to qualify . .. .

That I saw something funny in something you said was an aside but so we don't burden others, I would be pleased to receive a PM from you kidicious indicating where I misrepresented you. While I enjoy teasing you and poking holes in your theories, I do want to understand opposing arguments so please please let me know where this misrepresentation by me took place.

And please be specific. You obviously must be certain on this point since you did say "You seem to be taking a page out of Hitlers theory on propaganda."
