Pekka: There are a lot of areas that people are discussing that don't fit your criteria, such as Vancouver, much of California, etc.
Some alternatives to Boston that do seem to fit your criteria can be found in the Midwest/Mountains, include Chicago and Colorado (Denver). Chicago has several excellent, very well known colleges for you to attend. If you do well at a broadly known, highly reputable college, the doors will open for you. Most of the Midwest besides Chicago has a very high standard of living, since it is so cheap to live there. Some of the bigger cities such as Chicago have high wages.
Colorado might not have a large number of schools, but that's known as a sportsman's paradise. Skiing, hiking, kayaking, etc. Maybe Sikander or some other Coloradan can give you the scoop.
Regarding crime in the US, it's not the same as the crime you are probably used to. Euros need to be reeducated when they come here. You can be in a perfectly safe area that's only a couple of blocks away from a rough area. For instance, it's true that the rough areas of Detroit might remind you of Mogadishu, but if you stay out of those areas (which aren't the majority of places by a long shot), you are safer than you would be in Finland.

Montreal is an exceptional place for women though, namely because French women can be (and carry themselves) in an extremely hot manor.
Although it appears to me Montreal is going downhill. The first 10 or so times I went there, I was always floored at the hotness of the women. But the last 5 or 6, I have been consistently dissappointed. Not that there aren't hot women, but it just seems like there's alot more uglies. Maybe its because more obese Anglos are moving in? I don't know...

In rural Vermont they are. People are ugly in rural Quebec too... Or go to Gatineau, QC (across the river from where I live) and the women aren't exactly top notch there either.
Edit: Pekka, you shouldn't rule out the more southern places. They can be the nicest places in the US.

Vancouver is the only Canadian city I would even be remotely interested in living in though I might be tempted by Quebec city if it wasn't filled with French people. South of the border I'd stick to either New York or a major west coast city. That's just my personal choice. Top picks would be San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Portland in that order.
BTW Berkley is an extremely difficult school to get in to; every year scads of applicants with straight A's and near perfect SAT scores get turned away. Since your a white guy with blond hair who, presumably, doesn't have straight A's I'd suggest looking else where. Besides Berkley isn't a very good place for free thought. It's often written up as a place where people who are not left wing get ridiculed and even spite upon in public. It has great academics but they hippies can't handle someone who has a different opinion then them. I'd look at other University of California or California State University schools like UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, San Diego State, CalPoly San Luis Obisbo and others. You find the academics are also excellent but you may find the atmosphere a little more friendly.
I graduated from UC Santa Barbara and I'd recommend that school to anyone. It's one of the top public universities in the country, has near perfect weather, the town isn't to big nor to small, plenty to do, and lots of coastal back country nearby to hike and horse back ride in. That and the school is 70% female and right on the beach so there are lots of college cuties in bikinis.
