The boards are too political nowadays. That's why I hardly ever come here anymore. It used to be a wide variety of things - culture, philosophy, joking about personal life, babe threads, MBT threads... nowadays it's all politics, politics politics. But, when push comes to shove, this is the place on the internet where I hang my hat.

Might it have something to do with the election? The philosophy stuff has been moribund for ages.

Got spare money?

"If you don't like the content, start a new thread."

I did.

Where would I like this thing to go? Well, if things keep going as well as they are, a long term relationship would be great. So far it seems that we share alot of interests, but not so much that we're mirror images. I don't want to date someone just like me, you know?

Also, you guys ought to know that Asher's just putting on an act. He gets all fuzzy inside when he sees happy hetero couples walk down the street. And babies make him giggle with delight, anticipating the oh joyful day when he and his partner can adopt.

It is a refreshing topic on discussion, much moreso than the n-th thread about Kerry, or a thread about some terror attack.

Which is something you don't know beforehand. As a prospect a date/non-date is the coolest: few pressure, plenty of opportunity.

You're probably too late. I'll move to Stuttgart in October, and I'll have many things that will make my schedule quite unpredictable in the meatime.

I'll probably be able to spare a few hours to a 'Polytubbie, but there are too mayn factors for me to guarantee hosting.

I don't know, I've never been on one.

NZers aren't big on dating the American way, it gets in the way of the sex.

Thanks, Guynemer.

In about an hour I'll be starting my first exco (experimental college) film class. My very first time teaching ever. I've only assistant taught before. I'm quite excited - my plan is to talk about the early pioneers of film before moving on into how we can see the effects of those pioneers in the movie we'll be watching ("The Thief of Bagdad"). Then, I'll go through a brief glossary of terms that can help us understand the film's construction and storytelling, and then I'll show the special feature on the dvd - Orson Welles' own special introduction to the film. It's great. I'm thinking of making old Orson our class mascot...

Oh, and she said she might be there, and if so, cool. Another chance to see and possibly talk to her.

My class went pretty well. I'm basically talking about how films came to be what they are. Why all the films we watch nowadays follow the three act structure. How hollywood got to be how it is. The thief of bagdad is an excellent film to illustrate that point.

But watching it with so many people not used to silent films drove home a point to me - it is a film from a fundamentally different culture. Since it's my favorite film, that's sort of a bitter pill to swallow. I mean, it's not like they didn't like it - I think they digged some of the surrealistic imagery - but its the sort of story without irony that my generation finds more alien than a Cronenberg or a Lynch. We can relate more to the corruption of Mulholland Drive than we can to the unabashed religious revelation of The Thief of Bagdad.

Sort of like how we can understand a film of violence (The Passion of the Christ) and not feel as strongly about a film that isn't as clumsy and obvious in its depiction of faith (the passion of joan of arc).
