This is one of the two reasons I'm pulling for Oklahoma to lose, though I highly doubt it will happen. (Sidenote: The Big 12 North was just decimated this year. What the hell happened to Kansas State?) The other reason being that, conference schedule-wise, Auburn's more deserving of the title game shot than Oklahoma, IMO.
Should the Cyclones repeat the Wildcats' feat, however, I concur that Oklahoma/Utah will be one hell of a game, and since I think the Sooners are a tad overrated, I'd pick the Utes to squeeze it out. Utah deserves better than Boston College, though. (Message to the BCS: Yes, the ACC's poaching of the Big East was unfair, but the Big East did not deserve an automatic berth this year. They will next year, though, when Louisville comes in - man, right now, they're one last-second loss to Miami from being BCS busters themselves...)

I was kind of mulling the whole Big East thing over last night.
How about this, for example:
Utah vs. BC in the Fiesta Bowl
If a BCS buster, in my example Utah, were to beat Boston College.
The MWC takes the automatic bid from the Big East for 1 year. Unless, in the second year, the MWC rep, say Colo. State, were to win their game, then the MWC keeps the Automatic bid for another year.
If the MWC loses, the Big East gets their automatic bid back.
Needs to be tweaked somewhat, but I think it has some promise.
ACK!

I think the problem is a chain reaction. Say, Utah plays OU. Utah wins, then the MWC takes the Big XII's automatic tie in. The next year, Utah wins again, but OU is back in the Top 6, plays an SEC team and beats them... that means the Big XII takes the SEC auto bid.
It could have a spiraling effect where no one has any idea who has the auto bids from year to year except the experts and people in charge.
The only solution is a playoff .

I dunno if I'd say that. Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State are all good teams. I think there is an argument that they are better than Georgia, Tennessee, and LSU. And in total Strength of Schedule, OU wins out... which is why they are #1 in the computer polls.
And, the out of conference schedule counts. Auburn's is just pathetic.

Syracuse 43, Boston College 17
Way to come up big when it counts, eh?
You know what the scarier thing is? According to Big East tiebreaker rules, the bid comes down to Syracuse & Pittsburgh since in the set of four teams that are now tied atop the conference, they have better head-to-head records (2-1 for the Panthers & Orange, against 1-2 for West Virginia & Boston College). The tiebreakers for the two is BCS ranking, then head-to-head. Now, I'm guessing Pittsburgh will get a BCS ranking this week, since they were near the edge anyway. But... the Panthers have that make-up game next week against South Florida. Were they to lose that, they'd lose their BCS ranking... resulting in the 6-5 Syracuse Orange getting the Big East automatic bid due to the Orange's head-to-head win over Pittsburgh, despite having a worse overall record than any of the other three teams.
Just more fuel for the "Big East didn't deserve an automatic bid" fire...

quote: And how do you change the qualifying rules in the middle of a BCS contract? |
Fair point.
quote: Don't laugh, remember when OU was favored by 14 last year over Kansas State? |
Kansas State: 10-3, ranked #13 by the AP, screwed Heisman candidate (Darren Sproles).
Colorado: 7-4, unranked, no Heisman candidate.
I think there's a bit of a difference there.
quote: And, after all, West Virginia was ranked 10th in the AP Preseason poll. |
Only to justify the conference still getting an automatic bid. It was artificially high, everyone knew it, and they've gone on to prove it in spades.
quote: Sorry, I confused that with the first losing season Nebraska has had in however many years. However, its actually 43 years since the last losing year. |
Will you finally admit that Bill Callahan sucks as a football head coach? I've only been saying this since before Tampa took him to the woodshed almost two years ago.

Well if you don't like that example, how about the 1996 Big XII Championship when an unranked Texas beat #3 Nebraska?
It's a game where upsets are not rare.
And OU isn't as impressive at this point as they were last year. Their D especially.

Yeah, it was a conspiracy by the AP. Hehe... Actually in the preseason, Athlon's Rankings had WV at 5th. Most ranking had the Mountaineers in the Top 20 and just about everyone had them ranked above Cal. They may have been badly incorrect (which they also were on Kansas State, mind), but there was a feeling that West Virginia was one of the better teams in the country and would get that BCS spot.

No. Putting a West Coast offense in a school with a personnel suiting an option team is just going to be a painful transition. He'll be a decent head coach, but somewhere Frank Solich is smiling since Callahan's Nebraska will not get to levels Nebraska is used to.
