There are two basic options for our defense:

1) Full sea wall, ala GS in the ptwdgI; and

2) Partial sea wall covering the most vulnerable spots, with a large Cavalry reserve.

#1 is safer but very expensive

Then again, if you factor in the need to research MT in order to make #2 work, perhaps the cost equation isn't so clear cut.

The thing that tips the balance for me is CFC. If we controlled our entire continent, I would favor DeepO's suggestion to go with a full sea wall. But we don't, and CFC is our achilles heal. GS didn't have that issue with RP, because we had a RoP with them and covered their coastal tiles for them (and terrain improvement). I doubt CFC would allow that, so we're stuck with them being a weakness. Therefore, I think we need to go for MT.

We have far far too many tiles to ever create a new sea wall. We'd have to construct basically 100 new units which is about 1/3 of our economy right now. The overall cost for your option 2 is far less, even with Cavalry taken into account.

Fair enough, Trip. Besides, CFC tips the scales anyway. They're clearly not a very well-run team (they built a city on an iron resource, ffs!) and they will be the death of us if we assume they will do intelligent things.

The problem I see is that sans-sea wall we're gonna need a SHITLOAD of Cavalry.

Or boats, instead.

With a large enough sentry net up we won't need as many Cavalry. 40 shield Caravels are easier to come by than 80 shield Cavalry, plus they upgrade to something that we can use in the future. The problem is getting them built...

I tend to agree with covering vulnerable locations with the seawall, building a full sentry net, and large cav reserve. Lost term, out teching GCA/GWT and grabbing remaininf key wonders (esp. ToE/Hoovers) is our best shot. Our best shot at a win is probably Space. Culture wont happen either way, and they Can't win by UN. We could attempt a UN win, but I think it's cheesy.
