Capabilities: currently, almost zilch
Interests: Anything I could learn that might help.
I temporarily abandoned my learning attempts when it seemed that the code would be finished before I could learn anything useful. Why should I spend five months learning to write population model code if F_Smith can do a much better job in a week?
I might be able to hack up some simple, repetitive stuff if the goals are clearly defined and if someone needs it done. Maybe I'd learn better if I could actually work on a real project. But it seems that Java uses more skill than typing time.
By the way, this was another Richard that asked.

I am professional software developper. Mainly coding in C++ for now. I had been coding everyday in java for 1 year and a half. java is clearly my preferred language though I do mainly C++ ans some VB nowadays.
I have interests in all AI (I coded neural networks, used Genetic Algorithms, tinker from time to time with inference engines). I am particularly interested in frames (for those who don't know, it's kind of objects which can inherit from other objects rahter than fixed classes).
I'm also fond of "event-based" programming. That is more or less the idea behind Observer patterns and javabeans, (was also in Next). The idea is to reduce the number of classes and the number of classes known by one another, in particular at build-time.

Ok, I am a student of computer sciences at the university of erlangen, germany. The studies were a bit on the theoretical side till now, so I am not a very experienced programmer. The programs I have written were only a few pages in size, but I am eager to learn. I have used primarily C and VB till now, but also a litte bit of Java.

Better add my bit.
I am a full time professional Java Architect, recently (about a year ago) promoted from Senior Java developer/team leader. I work on a contract basis.
Before that I did a short spell as a Java developer to learn the ropes.
Before that I was a contract trouble shooter with senior skills in C++, VB, Delphi, and Intel assembler.
Before that (that is, before I got downsized) I spent 30 years as a mathematical modeller and statistician, and applications programmer at a government agricultural research station.
At other times I have been a drain layer, commercial cleaner, director in a (failed) insurance company, space salesman (failed at that too), stevedore, cowhand, translator, commercial artist, and pool player (pretty good one too).
I collected a few degrees in subjects like mathematics, Russian, history, and some others I have forgotten.
My abiding interests are games (all kinds, but especially strategy), astronomy, history and art. And, of course fishing and beer drinking.
I am a great enthusiast for: OOP, XProgramming, Java, and Open Source.
My current greatest regret is that Sun have not made Java Open Source. Of course they are worried about the Big Bad Corporation moving in and taking over...
Cheers

My part:
I'm a IT-Specialist, that's what my title say. I do the analysis and implementation. Gary should know about that, seems like he's been there, done that. Not a team leader yet though, although I lead a small one on one occasion.
Translated for everyone else it means I work 9 hrs a day developing client/server business applications with small to very large scale databases for a variety of industries. I work for a major international IT company, where I have been the last 5 years.
The last 2 years I have been doing Java solutions with web interfaces, but before that I have been programming in C/C++, Oracle Forms/Reports and PL/SQL, and PowerBuilder. Also did some MS Access development before I started working where I am now, but that was rather short lived, a while after finishing my engineering degree in computer science (somewhat like bachelors).
On the side I take part in the administration of a web site which uses php & mysql, and some open source projects, like clash. Another one is a redo of the Colonization game.
My strongest skills would be Java and databases.
In java I have extensive experience with Swing - I dived into the implemation of the Swing components in the (now old) Java 1.1.7, making improvements that were needed & implementing new events in the JTable class. The Swing was a bit crude in that release.
Besides this I have experience with XML, sockets, servlets/jsps, jdbc, and some other things.
What do I want to do?
I want to make computer games in Java, preferably strategy games as those are the ones I like the best.

Thanks for the welcome Mark, I'm just having a quick run through the demo and the code just now to find my way around.
Trying to see if there are any bugs in demo 5 I can find from the thread up above and having a look at the design documents.

Hi mark and everyone else...
as your request.. i will introduce myself here...
I'm Gonzalo Bianchi, a 26 years old programer from Argentina.
I apologize if some part of my english is not spelled or writed rigth, I made an intensive english course in oxford, but you can always learn something more in a new language.
i have 5 years experience in programing in C and i done some programing in C++, and I have develop some Java interface for web users, using oracle as a database in a client server model.
I'm looking for join a good work team for make a game... i was trying to make a game for myself, but i always get down because neither of the game i try was funny.. the only game i finish was a kind of galaxy programed in delphi (just want to learn how to use it.. and finish it..)
i know how to program with objects ( I work right now programing in VB6) and I always have to done some stuff in Java and C..
I have the resposability at work for looking into new ways for make the code look better, search for new technologies andmake new facilities for the rest of the programmers here. I code myself some programs like a CRC check, made in VB6 (yes, without objects and bits counter).. it work... I translated a C++ code into VB... was taken from the ZIP standard CRC check.
My wife (even im not married) is waiting a baby, that has to come out some of this day...
I work for the DGI (something like the IRS in USA), I made program for the people so they can pay their taxes (here almost every tax use a program) so you can download some of my work because is on the internet (I have to tell you that some of then are hard to use).
I have a lot of experience dealing with users interface.
if you have any question, regarding any subject of my experience, you can ask...
Bye.
Gonzalo

Hello All,
I just graduated from SUNY Tech in NY with a bachelors in computer science, and I'm recently moved to Orlando FL to study game design at FullSail. The extent of my current game programming experience is coding little java applets such as card games and anagram word games. I took a couple courses in every area of game design that a typical university offers but I've not yet had an opportunity to put all that theory to use. I hope that is what I might find here.

Hi Nick, welcome to Clash!
I think some of the academic game-design knowledge could do us a lot of good. At a minimum, it would be interesting to hear what conventional wisdom says, even though Clash is a rather unconventional game!
What types of game coding are you most interested in? I'm assuming you have at least moderate experience in Java, and will comment based on that assumption. If that isn't true, let me know...
Our biggest need right now is for gui coding, since we need a redone and greater-scope econ gui, and will soon need one for tech. The ecno Gui discussion is in a thread not very far down, please give it a look if you're interested. But there are other areas we could use coders in if your interests don't tilt toward gui stuff.
Our usual way to start off coders is for Gary, our coding lead, to give 'em a small project to see if they're really serious. Most don't pass that test . Once you show ability and desire to actually work we can figure out a specialty area for you to stake out. Gary is currently in the throes of RL for a bit, and incommunicado. I can send you the code right now so you can look at it and evaluate it, and you can familiarize yourself with Demo6 and where the design status is.
BTW, what's FullSail about?
[edit] ask about FullSail

Hey Dale, I thought you already Were working on the tutorial thing!
I hadn't heard from you, and was about to give up...
Here is what I think you should do.
1. Download and play D6 and read the manual
2. Give any feedback you feel important on those
3. I will get you the "Clash testbed" code which has an early version of D7 that you can start writing a tutorial on.
4. You should skim the
Planning for Demos 7 & 8 thread to see the things we wanted the tutorial to do. The plan has evolved somewhat since the beginning, so read more carefully near the end.
5. Also look over the Documentation: Manuals and Tutorials thread, which is the main place for discussion of what the tutorials should have.
6. Once you get a chance to discuss what approach you'd like to take, and gotten some feedback, post an example of a few of the html blocks you would like to use for the tutorial, and what triggers them.
7. If you can't do 1-6 within the next 10 days or so, then I will need to take over the job, because Demo 7 can't wait forever for the tutorial...
After that try a draft of a complete tutorial for the Dawn scenario.
This job should get much more interesting for you with demo 8, for which I would like to have a map editor, and the capability for you to make up your own tutorial scenarios, and mods!
If you think you can't do this job at any time, Please let me know, so that I can start in on doing it myself. There isn't a lot of extra time to get the tutorial done considering the work needed.
I'm going to cross-post this in the Documentation thread, since that's where it really belongs. We should continue the discussion there.
Hope you can make this work! (Especially since I hate doing it :evilgrin
Mark
