Do you play with or without sounds? Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Lately I've heard some talk to whether people play civ2 with the sounds on or not. It would be interesting to get an "official" answer to the question. So, what do you do? With or without?

Personally, I usually play without, as I think it's noisy and I like to listen to music when I play.

I want the full sensory experience when I play. Plus, I like editing sounds and making my own. I use Goldwave to edit and modify sound files. Civ2 will play stereo sounds as well, and that adds a lot to the atmosphere -and also to the file size.

A scenario without sounds is incomplete.

Perhaps I should have made sounds for my scns - but it's too late now.
I'd have to redisign all the units, right?

About sounds . . . . . Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

When I first began to play with and alter others scenarios, the sounds were one of the first things I worked on.

Since then, I always plan for sounds in a scenario. It's important to do so at the outset, I discovered early on, but things will get changed as the tweaking process continues.

Some of the sounds I've put into the slots were so evocative that they really made the scenario work for me.

Good sounds = atmosphere

There's still a lead for 'without'

But yeah, you would most likely have to reasign some units to make them all have the correct sound.

I sometimes make sounds for my scens, depending on my lazyness

Just recently I made some sounds for Blitzkrieg 1942, which I ripped from various other games such as Combat Mission. Found here: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthre...threadid=115962

I use Sound Forge to edit sounds.

I play with sound disabled and have never bundled sound files with my scenarios. The only kind of sound I wouldn't mind listening to would be built-in event-driven mp3 tracks, and that's not an option.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I get them from other games, mostly. The Camel sound is one of FORTY camel sounds in Medieval Total War. I think I got the Allah charge from a Civ2 scenario, though I can't remember. Cossacks and East/West Front are also gold mines, among many others. Most computer wargames sound is still in wav format, though MP3 is being used more often now. It's easy to convert MP3's to wav format with Goldwave software. It's downloadable here: http://www.goldwave.com/

I finish with the Microsoft Soundrecorder program to put the sounds into the format Civ2 uses. It's PCM 22.050 kHz 8-bit. Mono or stereo. Stereo wave files are twice as large as mono.

ToT can solve this puzzle by giving each unit it's own individual sound WAV!

I use Blaze Audio. It has a nifty 30 day trial. It rips, converts, edits, burns.

and there are plenty of free sites out there that have some decent sound effects:

Many scenario creators go to a great deal of work to select specific sounds to work with their scenarios.

Sound is a terrific way of conveying a theme or adding to the iconography of a scenario.. I really enjoy a scenario with sounds well-made - if a scenario has no sounds its a major turnoff for me.

Find some Civ2 sound fx on my forum at CDG (link in my signature). (the allah-charge sound effect was mine btw - the prayer sound is from the film "The English Patient", mixed with a cavalry charge and army cheering)
