From this site or CDG you can buy the english version, it's really cheap.

How can I convert fw savs/scns to tot?

Angelo Scotto's civ convertor is what you seek.
Catfish made a really good tutorial on a thread.
PM him and ask what thread this was...

why isn't there a scn editor?

Editors are for girly-men.
And the buggy CIV2 editor ruins your 'rule.txt' files.

About your crash trouble...Two solutions.

1. Buy the English version - Or reinstall and get all the ToT patches from poly or CFC.

2. Typhoon had a similar problem on this thread - Catfish gave him a link to CFC that seemed to help:

Go here, frog king!

@Stalin II:
What's so good about ToT?

80 units?
Multi-maps?
Incredible graphic potential?
Unique units and tech to each civ?
Unique sounds to each unit?
Extended rules and bigger events?

If thou don't believe me, check out this site and see what can be done!
And Heresson could also benefit from grabbing some
of these graphics to upgrade his default-version ToT!

Catfish's ToT site...

*phew*

Hope this is of help!

It's not a piracy. If these guys released Polish version only here, I won't buy a THIRD ToT to get the English one.
I supported them more than enough.
I'm one of the few people here that buy (most :cute of their cds legally

Thanks,

I downloaded the patches, but have the ToT installed on another computer, so it'll take me some tome to learn whether it works or not.

Only advance editor is crappy.
I could do without all editors, the graphics one I don't use, except for events one.
I'm not used to manual event-making

ToT was not well received by the Civ community when released due, in large part, to the awful graphics. While it has animated units, they are blurry and poorly done. The terrain is dark and ugly. There was no way to produce new animated units - it took about 3 years before Mercator cracked the code on that- so 2 dimensional units are still universally used.

The game was produced at a time when Infrogrames was aquiring Microprose from Hasbro. They rushed production so they could liquidate Microprose and layoff the design staff. I think this is why the artwork was left in the state it was. Finally, it was released at a time when people were already anticpating the release of Civ3.

Otherwise, some scenario designers have avoided it because of it's increased complexity and it's lack of editors. They pass on it's greatly enhanced capabilities because it's harder and more work. Fair enough, but it's pretty hard to push the envelope with FW/MGE. There's very little that hasn't already been done. And you can't make a real scenario at all with Civ3.

In the end, ToT was made with scenario makers in mind. This was obvious from the posts of it's designers here on 'Poly when it was released. It's the most modable version of Civ around. It has by far the greatest untapped potential.

Not at all.
ToT is the MGE engine with extra frills.

ToT is as upgradable and mod-able as MGE and FW. Only weith far more to offer.

You just have to be able to put aside the editor and leap into text-file editing.

I would not be making all my new scens on ToT if I thought it was not the best version...

PS
Civ3 is an arcade game maker's idea of what a strategy game should be.

ToT is true CIV - All it needs is the player to mod it to his tastes.

Personally, I make scenarios on whatever platform gives me more CIV.

I want more events, I want bigger, better graphics, I want special rules enhancements...

And all the rest!

ToT gives me this, and that is why I moved on!

No-one is forcing people to change, but I have made my choice...
I have decided to evolve and tackle a more complex version of the game I love.

I am a CIV-addict, what can I do otherwise?

No you don't Heresson - you can use the 2-d units in units.bmp as with MGE. You now have taller unit slots (I love those!), 15-bit colour and 81 unit slots to play with.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

May I suggest something for those who want to try a ToT scenario? Take one that you've done for MGE and convert it using the CivConverter. This is a bit involved but once you've got the hang of it, it works well. Catfish is the resident expert on this; I've forgotten how it's done.

Once that's done, you can start modifying it to take advantage of the feature of Test of Time. You'll need a graphics program like PaintShop Pro, but that's all. Nearly everything else can be done in Notepad.

The place to start is adding units - there are 18 new slots. Use the graphics program to add them. All units must be realligned to face to the right - while playing, ToT units flip from left to right depending on which direction they're moved and this prevents them from seeming to march backward.

Then go to the Rules text file, and fill in the specs for the new units in the @UNITS section. Now go to the first @Terrain section (ignore the other 3 - they're for multi-map scenarios). Decide which terrain you want to make impassible. At the end of the line for each type of terrain, there is a 'yes' or 'no'. 'Yes' means that type of terrain will be impassible. I like to make mountains impassible, and sometimes swamp.

Moving into more unfamiliar territory, go to the @UNITS_ADVANCED section. To give a specific unit the abilty to enter impassible terrain go to the G column, General flags. On the line for the unit you want to make all terrain change the 5th slot (counting from the right) to a '1', as follows: 00010000 .

In 'G' column, you'll also be able to mess with invisibility (00000001) and other things.

Tips for the more involved aspects of ToT, including events, can be found on the Cradle of Civilization site, here: http://coc.apolyton.net/guides/index.shtml

Hey!
Here is that Catfish tutorial for all you fellows,
you'll need Angelo Scotto's CIV-CONVERTOR.

quote:
Assume I've extracted CivConverter into c:\unzipped\civconverter\ and the scenario into c:\unzipped\scenario\

Method 1:
a) Start Menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
b) To change directory: cd c:\unzipped\civconverter
c) To convert: civconverter c:\unzipped\scenario\scenario.scn

Method 2:
a) Start Menu -> Run... (or Windows key + R)
b) To convert: c:\unzipped\civconverter\civconverter c:\unzipped\scenario\scenario.scn

Method 3:
a) Get Microsoft's PowerToys for Windows XP. It contains various unofficial enhancements for XP,
one of which adds the Command Prompt to the menu when you right-click a directory (folder).
The prompt will automatically start in that directory.

b) Right-click the c:\unzipped\civconverter folder.
c) Select Open Command Window Here.
d) To convert: civconverter c:\unzipped\scenario\scenario.scn

For my Dictator scen to be converted;
I merely put this into the 'Run' command on my start menu...

c:\CIV2\converter\civconverter c:\CIV2\converter\DICTATOR\D3.scn

Use your own file system and folder setup in place of mine for your own conversions!

And do not forget to check out techumseh's awesome Operation Market Garden scenario.

Also Boco's massive epic, the El Aurens scenario!

If you want to dive into the world of ToT scenarios, you must try these for sure!

Also, if we want more scenarios, we should make a big effort to convert some classics!

That said, techumseh has some very good ones on his website...
