Here's a larger picture of the bulge in question:

In any case, this, plus Bush's long pauses at places and saying "Let me finish" when he wasn't being interrupted, plus the Bush campaign's insistance that there were no shots of the candidates from the back add up to something being fishy.

And I don't think it would be a kevlar vest - at a baseball stadium with thousands of people that would be hard to secure entirely, I could understand, but this is a small debate hall transformed into one of the most secure locations in North America.

Definitely a wire. I always wondered when a candidate would use a wire in a debate. Bush thought that he could substitute having a wire for practicing didnt work, to well. It was probably used to shock him, when he said something stupid. Poor guy.

Well, now that we "know" Kerry had notes and Bush has electronic coaching, I can safely say that Lehrer had an anal probe ready at the time to "punish" the candidates if they broke the rules too much.

I bet its body armor. If it was Rover doing the talking for Bush, he would've done a hell of a better job than what he did.

It would make no sense for the Prez to have body armor on- send the wrong message- that I am not safe- if the president feels unsafe standing in a presidential debate, with the secret service everywhere, then how is anyone else safe?

From the looks of it and the curved outline it appears to be a bullet proof vest. Regardless of message, the Secret Service have their job to do and making the PRez wear it is appropriate, especially in light of several GOP headquarters being shot up that same night. Its not so much the terrorists that one has to watch out for its the rabid dems.

Scratch that, they're the same thing.

So let me get this logic. You are in favor of one line of defense. An offensive outward looking defensive posture but no fall back position.

You should be completely onboard with Iraq then and the poor state of domestic homeland security.

On second thought, I bet it was simply to prevent Bush from being shot in the back as Kerry is so bravely noted to do.

as with the pen stuff, we need to see the high resolution stuff from fox. The low res images of Kerry looked like he was pulling out something white and square, and this does appear to be some box with a wire going up towards his ear.

Give it up- stupid spin. I have not heard of any president wearing a bulletproof vest at a political event - can you come up with a single instance? A single other photograph? ANYTHING?

I know how much you like going off on tangents without anything to back you up, but this is specially silly.

As for the "accusation", I think the weird wrinkle works best for me.

It was probably a bullet proof vest. The Secret Service probably requires the president to wear one at public events just in case someone tries something.

If indeed it is a kevlar vest in the picture then it was not publicised. From whence come your confidence that any previous instance of wearing a kevlar vest would have been made public?

A vest goes fully around. As for the notion that the Secret Service makes it madatory-bullshit- look at the president going throught crows without a suit on- it would be obvious he was wearing such a thing, but there is no evidence, EVER. If he doesn;t wear one when walking in a crowd, he will be wearing one while in a canned event like a speech? And of course any such item would be on the press- no way that could be hidden.

Please you guys make it worst by stupidly claimign its a vest- just say its a damned wrinkle, or an effect of the light, but to claim a bullet proof vest? Bullshit.

My immediate thought was it was a wire for a mike. Did he have one of those tiny mikes attached to his suit?
