You would think it would be obvious that a guy entering a movie theater with 1 liter bottle of coke under his coat was carrying such a thing. Yet somehow I have managed to do so all of the time.

My first guess in looking at that bulge was that it was it was a portable microphone (a backup for the microphone on the podium) although usually it's strapped around the waist though.

That thing is to far big to be a radio transmitter/reciever. The FBI/CIA/Secret Service grade communication devices fit right into the ear without wires.

Musician grade wireless devices are credit card sized and cost like 500$. You would expect that the most powerful man in the world would get something better, not something the size of a cold war army radio.

I remember The Daily Show back in 2000, post-Republican Convention show. There was a clip of Bush sitting down with Laura next him, him legs spread apart, and a spot shadow demonstrated that our future president was rather aroused. Laughed my ass off.

Give me a ****ing break-honestly. 1. RFK was a cadidate, NOT president-by your logic, Kerry had one on as well- no bulge from him.

Those things are NOT easy to hide- I think it would be far more obvious if he had such a thing on, far more than this. And as for the idea that the leader of the new world was all of a sudden wearing a bullte proof vest, which would be a major development would not make the press-what kind of fools are you guys? Such a thing would not stay out of the press.

Put an end to popups!

All I know is that Bush wears Kevlar vests whenever he throws the 'first pitch' at games. Why is a debate that much different?

Suffering from ads?

Kevin Drum addressed the question of a hidden earpiece, but doesn't draw any conclusions. (Some bloggers believe the bulge was a repeater for an in-the-ear-canal earpiece.)

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/ar...4_10/004835.php

I think the theory is plausible because of:

1. Bush's sudden interjection "let me finish!" - even though nobody had interrupted him. If you go to cspan.org, you can download video of the debate and advance to ~ 40:30 to hear him say that.

2. Bush's closing statement. He delivered it as if he were repeating an oath - repeating words being fed to him by Karen Hughes, perhaps? If you advance to the end of the cpan download, you'll see what I mean.

The irregular height and shape inside the red outline look like a coil line or other comms line to me.

Body armor would either be lighter all around, (some vests are very thin and discreet), or anything that attached that massively would also show other signs of distending the suit - he's got on a suit tailored to him, not to him wearing something like RBA.

Which takes care of the body armor theory, but I think it's interesting that it's that thick and ends where it seems to end.

So, why would the president of US wear a huge com device under his jacket, when any musician could buy a credit card sized wireless mike for less than 500$, and intel community deviced fits right into the ear?

It could be comm device added with a light trick. But even so, it STILL seems to be too huge. Then again, what can it be? I have no idea. Maybe he did yoga the night before and twisted his spine like that. Or maybe it's one of those new devices that sends electric shocks to your body to make it super strong momentarily.. err maybe not.

If the president were actually being assisted during what was being presented as a one-on-one debate, I should think that ought to be a major news story.

Saddest thing is, I would not be overly shocked if this were indeed a wire. Unfortunately, it would be in keeping with the moral tenor of this president and his administration.

You'll note I made specific reference to candidate b/c shocker!! prez candidates get a secret service detail to follow them.

Now the assertion that Kerry didn't have a vest (maybe so maybe not) means any of a number of things

1) There is no credible elevated threat against Kerry - Likely and probable since there has been NO REPEAT NO violence directed at Kerry or Dem HQ's. Makes you go hmmmm.....
2) Kerry decided not to listen to the secret service
3) The secret service felt no compunction to inform him
4) Kerry's bucking for another PH as the commission will soon revoke his truly fake one. Mr. Kerry meets Bernie Mac's Mr. 3000.
5) MtG's correct
