Well, I finally got around to buying Alpha Centuari the other day, but I bought it with suspoicions. Although it had gotten good reviews, I was suspicious of it's sci-fi nature and such. But after getting past its vast complexity and learning curve, I found it really good! This really surprised me as I thought I would get tired of the futuristic stuff quick, but it really doesn't seem to matter.
So I'm just saying that if anyone out there hasn't bought SMAC yet, do it, and get CTP on the 31st. With Command and Conquer 2 on the horizon, and Age of Empires 2 in the works, it looks like it is shaping up to be a great year for strategy gamers!

I purchased SMAC the day it came out. There was no way I was going to miss this title. The game is good, but it is not what I was hoping for. Why?
You mentioned Command and Conquer 2 and Age of Empires 2 in your post. I can only conclude by this that you tried both C&C and AoE and that you are impressed by both titles. I like both of these games also, but I like them for the multiplayer aspect of the games. There is nothing like playing against a human being when it comes to unpredictability and satisfaction in victory.
I was looking forward to SMAC multiplay but the experience has left me disapointed. Multiplayer in SMAC appears to be nothing more than an add-on. For the life of me I can't understand why when you play someone one vs. one in SMAC multiplayer the game forces you to use the remaining five computer controlled factions. What's with this? If I wanted to play the computer factions I would just fire up a solo game.
As a stand alone offline game I won't argue with you that the game is decent. But as a multiplayer game it is truly lacking. Once you go multi it's tough to go back to just playing with yourself.

Palpatine, your signature is not correct. It should be, "The power of the dark side is with him" not "The dark side of the power is with him".

I have played SMAC, for sometime now, and been unsatisfied with it and blamed it on the bugs, but now as I have downloaded the patch 3.0, I realise the game is just plain boring.
In fact it sucks.
I have played and won perhaps 5 to 10 games in transcend difficulty, the AI is so dum it's not even a challenge in the first game, if you are an experienced civ2-player. Whats more is that you end up just like in civ2 micromanaging your empire, because the governors and the automatic format are not just dum, but outright loony with an attitude.
I really hope CTP will be nothing like SMAC.
