This little girl's name is Hyacinth. She's a really cute kid, as well as probably off her rocker:

The last one she's holding a pair of binoculars. She invented a game where she'd look into the large end at someone (mostly me) and then slowly move towards them making a weird noise. She'd wind up pointing the other end up your nose, or in your ear, mouth, etc.

She did that for almost an hour.

What a beautiful country....some of the chicas are cute....

Looks like you guys had a great time. One always hears about how poor the Philippines are....didn't really see that side in these pictures. I can see that as a desireable place to retire.

I got a lot of what most Americans would think are dirty looks, but really it's that they are so shy towards Americans/Europeans. All I had to do was wave or smile or say something to them and the furitive look/frown would vanish and they'd smile back and say hello.

I.e., pretty much what Ted said.

They do make on average about $3/day... and unemployment is rampant. Even Lisa, who has a 'good' managerial job, works 12 hours a day with 3 days off/month, and brings home ~$500 a month (US)...

Those pictures really wouldn't have been possible if there weren't 3 'wealthy' Americans paying for most of it.

illusionist

btw how is the English speaking over there? This may have already been asked before, but I don't remember.

If I were to retire over there, it would be nice if I could communicate with people . I know a little spanish, but I doubt they speak that much anymore. I certainly don't know anything about asian languages.

Got spare money?

Among the educated, English is very good over there. Most that I met seemed to speak some English. Tagalog (more around Manila) has a lot of spanish and english words. Cebuano (more around Cebu) is a lot more confusing for me.

Oh, much to the contrary.

My favorite memory is when Lancer, Theban and I were walking back from the cafe, and we came across an ancient woman hobbling along. She looked up to see us and her face exploded into a wide grin like it was Christman. "Oh!" she exclaimed, "American boys!"

(My guess is that she is of that generation who remembers us for kicking out the Japanese Imperial Army in WWII.)

Most of Dolores's family spoke some english, even if broken. Well enough to communicate. When they spoke to each other they would switch between english, spanish, tagalog, and vesayen the same way SoCal hispanics switch between english and spanish.

Get a bigger avatar today!

Both of you guys left too early.

Hey! The Lancer mobile is on the road. We bought one of those tiny Suzuki 'Carry' vans. Cherry red!...aircon...coool.

Theben didn't get married over here but he's rather attached to a hologram shirt...

Glad you both had a good time in Cebu. We're heading over there on Monday, Raoul's birthday party. We'll be staying at his house but will hit the Waterfront for dinner and drinks. WooHoo!

Anybody here right now?
