Little scoop for Apolyton:
Planets in Galactic Civilizations II will be handled totally differently.
In Galactic Civilizations planets were simply rated a given quality level with the higher the number being better and that translated into production which could be enhanced with buildings (factories and research centers).
In GalCiv 2, you still have a quality level but all that means now is that a planet will have that many usable "blocks" on the planet that you can do things with.
You can use things like soil enhancement to turn a useless block into a useable block. But overall, you have to build up your planet with things on the usable blocks.
So by default, a planet would have only 3 production points (the initial colony).
A Factory might add 3 points. Total. No more of thise "25% manufacturing bonus" stuff. They all give X number of production points. Period. That's because you can build as many factories as you want.
In GalCiv 1, you just queued up all the social programs. but in GalCiv 2, each planet is unique. And your strategies will differ.
Plus you'll have things like ruins, mineral deposits, and other things. And this will all be displayed ona really cool looking top down surface map of the planet.

Precisely. So you can build multiple of the same type of building.

I just read the interview with Brad Wardell on HomeLan which is linked on galciv.com. There was this passage:
"I also wanted us to address what I considered to be some of the limitations in the first game. Things like ship design, being able to play as other civilizations, fleets, a much MUCH MUCH better way of managing planets, and more customization."
I think that all of these features address the only major weakness in GalCiv: the lack of replayability. Looks promising!

I didn't have a problem with how it was before, but this does sound better.
And to me GC1 is plenty replayable, and now I'll be able to go get Altarian Prophecy!

It's not done but the beta should start being available next year if you preorder or have drengin.net.

It would be nice if they'd release it on disc as soon as it's finished.
