By the way, plains tiles with wines or sugar are the exception to the irrigation rule: those should be mined under Despotism because the despotic tile penalty prevents them from getting any benefit from irrigation. Similarly, grassland with wines or some other food bonus can benefit from irrigation even under Despotism, although the advantage from doing that is a lot stronger if you manage labor yourself than if you let the governor do it. (The governor has a nasty habit of working more forests when good food bonuses are available, which means the city ends up not getting particularly better growth than if the tiles had been mined instead of irrigated.) Also note that in managing labor yourself, you have to check the labor allocation each time a city grows or it finishes building a worker or settler. That's a pain, but as I said, it can produce major advantages when good food bonuses are available (and assuming you use the luxury slider to take advantage of the bonuses).

+... something if the defender is in jungle or forest. I forget how much.
+50% if defender is on a hill
+100% if defender is on a mountain
+50% if defender is in a town with walls, or in a city (city=size 7-12)
+100% if defender is in a metropolis (size 13+)

does that mean a size 1-6 town without walls doesn't have a bonus?

i lost a fortified musketman in a 4-pop-town to a hittite 3-men-chariot yesterday. They got a golden age from it :/

Got spare money?

That is what it means, no extra bonus if in a town and no wall.

As most of these threads mention, any anecdotal battle is meaningless. You could see the preverbial spear beats tank, given the wrong kind of luck.

Near as I can tell in ten runs, it is a 20% chance to win. So in short you got hozed, but thems the breaks.

Tired of ads?

Also pay attention to the way the AI expands, improves tles

I never tried it till recently.

1. Close cities, this helps with cultural expansion.
2. Mine bonus grass tiles, even in despot.
3. Roads, roads roads for connection, happiness with luxuaries,
and money

I am now having a better time of it a monarchy, something I could never do. Now I might attempt the next level.

Stick with it and enjoy.

Since I didn't read all the posts, this advice my be redundant.

1) Build units and go explore. This allows you to find those barb villages and get techs from them. Build your early cities near the coast and on rivers. Take advantage of specials. Do this and you will be generating a lot of science.

2) Set your tech goal for Philosophy. Hope and pray that you're the first to get these techs that lead to Philosophy AND hope you're lucky to generate a SGL (Scientific Great Leader). If you're the first to philosophy--free tech. Once you get philosophy, go for Literature. If you get/got any SGLs, save them for important wonders like Great Library & Colosuss.

3) Focus building on science producing wonders. See above.

4) Plan when you want to start your Golden Age. Building certain wonders and special units that win battles against opposing civs will trigger a golden age for you. If you're advancing fast than the AI civs, save your golden age for Medieval. Lots of wonders in this age.

5) BUILD ROADS!!!!!!!

6) Monopolize the stragtegic resources. Especially rubber, oil, aluminum, & uranium. Capture these strategic resources and your guaranteed victory.

Good Luck.
