This game is amazing - no-one has made a site about it, from my searching. Or a newsgroup, for that matter. any way, I'm sure loads of people have it, so can someone tell me how to locate the Rebel headquarters?

Uh, that would explain it. I hated it at first too, but now, a year later I've played it and think it's great. The end-game is just silly though. Nice finishing sequence, too.
