Curiously enough, 'vel' in Danish means just that, 'well'. The words 'Lev vel' mean '(do) live well'.

What I'm trying to say is that I hope you get vel soon, Vel.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Isn't the Avatar we hold right now our best online representation?

Anyway, i'm back from work and nobody has stepped up to the plate yet. So I've collected every avatar i could find on this thread and gave it a try. So here goes my first version.

Don't forget the image will have to be printed. So it's better to judge on paper instead of the screen.

Suffering from ads?

I've been away for a while, and wasn't really planning on coming back, but how could I stay away from a thread like this? (thanks alva, for emailing me about it)

I'm not ashamed to say I shed a few tears reading that first post. It seems weird to have those emotions about a guy I've never met, but that's the kind of guy Chris is.

I've never really prayed before, but I think I will tonight.

Get well soon, buddy.

Weird, they are indeed there but for some reason they don't show up when i browse through the graphics. Must be some sort of PSP bug.

Guess I'll have to bring Irfanview.

Next try coming up...

Bingo, Irfanview found the problem right away. While I was saving everyone's avatar I was saving them with the .gif extension while many where .jpg's.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Vel's CIV3 strategy threads made me stick to Apolyton when I found out the hard way CIV3 was not CIV2 and had to Google "civilization 3 strategy", back in late 2001. After a month or two, I stopped lurking and started to post myself. After a year in the CIV3 forums, I moved on to the off-topic forum to protest the Iraq war in early 2003, and I never looked back. Seems I'm stuck forever. And it's all Vel's fault!

I think Vel is about my age and it's a real pain to see someone that young (well, middle-age, whatever) vanish.

14 years ago, I saw my own dad go away in cancer. I saw him suffer for 2 years, loose weight and hair, get weaker and finally die in pain and bitterness. At least the whole family gathered to stay with him the last weekend before he died on a Tuesday. It was not planned to be that way, just a co-incident. If I only knew, I would had stayed for a few more days, but I had to get back to university to not miss too much of the education.

On the other hand, I have colleagues at work who recovered from cancer and is still going strong, years after. Let's hope for the best! We want to see "The Cure for Cancer" wonder movie every time we log into Apolyton. The reason that wonder gives you one happy citizen in every city is not because one more citizen gets well, but because one friend of a citizen in each city gets well. Vel has friends in every city on the Apolyton planet, and if he gets well, it's like the Cure for Cancer wonder is built.

The scary part is that I associate most of the avatars with the respective posters, quickly. Avatars such as Skanky's aren't easy to forget .

I will add it to the list. But at the moment it is getting late. So here's my plan:

  1. Time is an issue. Vel's condition seems to be serious so it is important we do this right now!
  2. We still need to send the collage to Vel. Anyone who hasn't posted yet, please do. I'll include your avatars tomorrow morning.
  3. The collage needs to be printed.
  4. Mailing it from Europe would take too long. Someone in the US has to mail it to Vel.
