Missing topic titles Inflate your Upload Space

When I go into any of these forums the topic titles are blank, including this forum, so I can't see what the thread is about.

Screen shot attached.

I use the IE browser and have no problems with other Boards. I have cookies enabled so I don't think it's that.

Thanks.

It's because your pic showed up as an attachment. And I've never seen such a problem before, you must be unlucky...

People are too lazy to download attachments, generally. And not everyone can open Word documents.

I've no idea what's causing the problem though.

How about if you try to select the topic titles? Is the text just hidden (same color as background) or are there no text at all?

When I try to click on the thread title nothing happens.
Looks like I'm screwed.

Oh well, does anyone know of any active MoM boards? Recently got MoM to run on my XP compouter and would like to check some forums.

Thanks.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

King Krull,

You might try using a different style of display for the forums (the drop-down box on the upper left of http://apolyton.net/forums/ ). If it's a gray-on-gray problem, this might let you see something by changing the background color.

As for active MoM forums, the closest thing is probably the GalCiv forum (register at www.galciv.com). In case you hadn't heard, Stardock is planning an MoM sequel, targeted for 2007. Several of the faithful are hanging around the GalCiv boards waiting patiently. If you look in the "would you pre-order MoM2" thread, you'll find some links to other websites, too.

That would need a metaspam filter.

That may not be as silly as it sounds. King Krull, do you by any chance have any firewall/spamfilter/other protection software installed, especially Norton Internet Security? If so, try disabling it and see if that makes the thread titles visible...

And before anyone starts: no, that program isn't actually smart enough to detect spam It just randomly (as far as I've ever been able to tell) removes links all over the place...

Excellent. I turned off my Norton Internet Security (NIS 2004), and my Anti-Virus for good measure, and the titles are now showing. Had to refresh first though.

Only snag now is disabling both programmes while browsing this forum....

Anybody any idea what I have to chnge in NIS to have the best of both worlds? Should add I'm not a techie.

Thanks.

Due to circumstances I no longer have access to the NIS manual, but a quick Google gave this solution, which sounds about right from memory:

quote:
To resolve the problem: 1. Open Norton Internet Security. 2. Click Options. 3. Click Internet Security. This step is not always required. 4. Click Advanced Options. 5. Click the Web tab. 6. Click Add Site. 7. Type [apolyton.net] in the Add Site/Domain dialog box, and then click OK. 8. Click OK until the Options dialog box is closed.

A better solution would be to get rid of NIS altogether, you're probably missing other links on other websites as well, whether you noticed it (yet) or not. IMNSHO (and I am not alone in this) Norton has in recent years officially become the Worst Software Company In The Whole World (yes, worse than Microsoft )

Yep, seems the only thing that can hose up a computer faster than a Windows update is Norton Systemworks. I have begged my manager to remove it from the computer at work, but he is convinced that if he does the management software we use somehow won't work anymore.

Thanks once again. I'll try that.

Yes, you and the others aren't the only ones who have criticised Norton.

Someone said what's the difference between a cold and Norton Internet Security? You can get rid of a cold. Apparently, even if you do a full uninstall it still leaves bits and pieces on the system, according to the Microsoft boards.

Can anyone recommend an alternative package to use for
anti-virus and a firewall? I know the new Service Pack 2 has a firewall but it clashes with Knights of the Old Republic which I'm playing, so don't want to install the Pack just yet.

Thanks.

Locutus

Didn't work. Clicked on NIS, clicked on Options, clicked on NIS.

There's no advanced options and no web tab. The four tabs are General, Live Update, Firewall and Email. In Firewall there was an option that looked likely, went into it but there was no 'add' button.

I have for many years used the combination of AVG (a small, free, regularly updated anti-virus app) and ZoneAlarm (a free, software firewall) and have never had a problem. Both programs run well together and with the rest of the system and they both are available as free versions.

I have used both Norton and McAFreakShow and found both to be bloated resource hogs that caused more problems than anything else. BTW, there has been much written about the "stickiness" of Norton after an uninstall. You will probably have to clean your Registry to finish the uninstall. Good luck.

I, too, have used ZoneAlarm for years and after the free Norton AV ran out on the new computer I went to Grisoft.com's AVG.
