Yet another report from the bargain bin diver - MOO2 for $5 Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

well, encouraged by the suggestions of folks here, ive had my eye out for MOO2. I thought id seen a jewelcase version for $10, but the store where i recalled seeing it didnt have it.

Then I try my local EB, and they have a used version, big box, manual, and all for $5.

I wont install it till im done with PST. I will of course largely be discussing it in the MOO1/2 forum, not here, but i thought id let y'all know, and say thanks. (more thanks to come if it turns out to be really good)

I doubt you will regret it; a veritable bargain.

You're still working on Planescape?

You'll be playing MOO2 in 2007 at this rate.

sigh. Not much gaming time (especially this past summer), and I found that game very involving. I also tend to play RPG's somewhat slowly.

But yeah, thats one reason I dont expect EVER to be buying new games, and never complain about not enough good games. I DID put aside MS Flight Sim 98, Myst, and games in the first Simmania pack pretty quickly

Hey, playing games several years old is good. I do myself often start playing a game that's some 2-3 years old. There are a few releases that I want immediately, but others are picked up along the way...

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Congrats; you're in for a treat!

I like it a lot, although I've barely scratched the surface of the game...

The music, the game's atmosphere, the galaxy interface... I also tend to get very nostalgic when playing MOO2; I have no idea why...

The only thing I dislike are the spies... Never figured out how to curb the other races' spies...

Semantic question for you all: should I use "are" or "is" in the sentence "The only thing I dislike are the spies"?

I. e. should I let the verb refer to "thing" (singular) or "spies" (plural)?

"The only thing I dislike is spies" feels awkward, but I guess you can have it both ways?

I think IS is correct, since what you dislike is "the thing" The thing IS spies, not the thing ARE spies. To this english speaker "the only thing i dislike are spies" is considerably worse, though im no grammarian.

The preferred solution, of course, is to rewrite to avoid the awkwardness. "The only thing i dislike is the way theyve implemented spies" or "the only thing i dislike is espionage"

Building your own spies and using them defensively helps. As does researching techs that give them bonuses.

I'm just guessing that you're not playing as the Darloks?

Hmm I got it for $40 Canadian ($32 US) in 1997 - and I still consider it a great bargain given all the playing time I have gotten out of it - a real classic (unlike its successor )

Heh, heh; that's right! I usually play as (*runs for cover*) the humans.

Yeah, I've asked about spies in this forum before and gotten the same kind of advice. How do you use them defensively? I do assign them to various races, but all that happens is that they disappear after a while (killed?)... And the tech stealing just continues...

I'm always ahead science-wise and it really annoys me when the races I have treaties with steal my techs...

What you should say is "I dislike the spies in MOO2."

Phrases like "The only thing I dislike is" and "What I want to say is" and so on are poor grammar.

Or "The only THINGS I dislike are spies."

Both of the nouns should be of the same tense.

Just keep building them and don't try and insert any into your opponents territory to conduct your own spec ops unless it's really necessary.
IIRC you can amass about 60 or so and they'll act defensively by default, inhibiting any enemy spies just by being there.
I don't know the exact math surrounding this but every spy you have has a small chance to intercept an enemy.

I usually play a custom creative race with a spying penalty so it can be a little rough early on but after you begin getting some of those techs that boost your own spies they're generally more than able to hold their own defensively.
