Cult of Planet destroyed!

In still unconfirmed report, armed conflict has erupted between members of the Cult colony pod and Gaian patrol mindworm. Apparently, Cult of Planet was moving with its newly aquired colony pod towards area designated as future site of Cult of Planet, when patrol mindworm intercepted them and placed all Cult members under arrest. It seems that Lady Deirdre's compromise was only a ruse to single out majority of Cult members and arrest them. Although many are shocked, the Cult problem has been solved once and for all. Remaining Cult agents will probably be unable to affect Gaian Union in any way.
Mindworms encircled their colony pod and telepathically transmitted arrest message. However Cult of Planet resisted and fought back. General Darsnan reports over six hundred casualties on Cult side, before the rest of them surrendered. Mindworm unit has suffered minor loses too. Among the dead is Prophet Cha Dawn, who suffered a ironic fate - being devoured by mindburrowing larvae after all years of fervent native life worship. It seems that he won't be trialed for his crimes after all, as many hoped, although his body shall be examined by our scientist in order to determine what prevented Cha Dawn from entering puberty and remaining physically a child. Over two thousand Cultist members were arrested and will be trialed in next few months. Most of them can undergo sanatorium treatment and return to normal, but some of them cannot be rehabilitated. Lady Natalinasmpf has already suggested nervestapling them, but she met a strong oppositions among other Lords. Lord Illuminatus has suggested including some of Cultist into special military forces, like 12th Rogue Team, using their negative qualities in a useful way. Sister Godwinson has also offered spiritual rehabilitation to those who request it. The rest of them will probably be exiled from the Union or reduced to Drone status.
Many question treacherous tactics employed by the High Council, but everyone agrees that the time of Cult is over.

Learning with Planet

One of the more bizarre life forms on Planet is the spore launcher. This is a nearly sessile creature, more plant than animal, which lives in symbiosis with land-based xenofungus.

An individual spore launcher is a semi-rigid, tube-like organism about eight yards long. One end is open, and includes a cluster of sensory organs. The other end is closed, rooted in a complex knot of tissues and organs which forms the main body of the creature. Spore launchers exist in commensal colonies, with several launchers clinging to one another at their main bodies and extending their sensory clusters in various directions. The smallest spore launcher colonies ever observed had 5-6 members, while the largest had 60.

At close quarters, spore launchers are nearly helpless; they are physically very strong, but too slow to make any kind of personal attack. At range, however, spore launchers can attack by firing xenofungus spores at an intruder. These spores are solid projectiles of dense organic material, about two inches in diameter and six inches long, massing 8 pounds. Any one spore launcher can fire one spore every 3 seconds , and will have dozen or two dozen spores when encountered. New spores are grown at a rate of about one per day, but only if the spore launcher is in a xenofungus area.

Each spore launcher has some Telepathy Powers. Their use of Mental Blow has the same special effects as for mind worms or human telepaths. Spore launchers normally use their telepathic attack only in self-defense, or after they have depleted their supply of spores.

Spore launchers are a danger not only to individual colonists, but to the colonial infrastructure. When directed by the xenofungus, they can launch spores on a high arc. At the top of the arc, the spores change their shape and glide for very long distances, coming down gently in territory which has been developed by human terraformers. Such spore-falls have been observed at distances of up to 50 miles from the originating spore-launcher colony.

Spores arriving over such distances do no direct damage. Instead, they burrow into the ground, triggering an outburst of fungal growth in several days. The new fungus mats thus created are no more than a few dozen yards across, but their initial appearance involves an episode of wild growth and can be very hard on humans and their constructions.
