1. A meltdown is when you have playing a game of conquests for several hours and you don't get the coal resource.
OR
The RNG (random number generator) causes you to lose five cavalry attacking a spearman on the plains.
OR
I guess it could be a nuclear powerplant going nova on ya'

2. Democracy is better for economy, which is very important to the game. However communism is great to war with. Also, if you have a far flung empire, communism may be better in reducing corruption. It really depends on the situation you find your empire in.

3. You will have to use Windows Explorer, My computer or a command prompt to manually delete the file.

4. You can set a worker to clean up all pollution. I can't recall the keyboard shortcut, but if you go to preferences, turn on advanced buttons...it's one of those buttons that show on the screen (lower center).

If you are not using C3C, I would say commie is not of much value. In C3C it is viable for large empires.

Saves folder will be in the civIII directory for original civ3 and a sub direcotry for PTW or Conquest.

When I go to C:/.../Civi3/saves, all I find is one folder labeled auto that has nothing in it when I open it.
And can you use gold to hurry production in communism instead of killing citizens? I have over 10,000 gold just sitting in my treasury with nothing to do.

You are looking at the CD, it will not have any saves on it as it is not writable.

Open Windows explorer and go to the HD you have the game installed to (C or D likely). Look in Program Files.

If worst comes to worst you can just work out what the file name is and use windows search....

You can edit governments in the civ editor... But allowing this option for communism may make it way unbalanced. Remember, communists hate money cause they hate capitalism... Why would they work quicker if you gave them something they hate? :P

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I don't know, Communism doesn't appeal to me. I always found Democracy to be working best. War weariness is not so much of a problem since I don't usually have such long lasting wars.
I think with C3C Fascism is a better option for warring civs than communism.

Communisim Support Apolyton, buy Alpha Centauri

If you're empire is really big, and you're playing C3C, I'd go Commie. Especially at war. You don't make as much money or research as fast, but your production goes WAY up. Waste is quite minimal in communisim if you have enough courthouses and police stations built.

I REALLY dislike the pop hurry side of it, but then I usually have plenty of money for Espionage.

For large empires and/or war, Communism is the way to go. Fascism is broken as a war gov't because it's too hard to grow your cultural borders. Corruption is also worse.

Democracy is not worth the time to research plus the time to switch.

I currently control about a little over half the map. One side I've killed everyone exept Egypt, which I just can't.
Then, I wiped out one civ on the other side, and I'm having corruption problems there. But i can't waste any turns switching gov from democracy to communism.
Also, I checked the program files in C and there isn't one labeled Civ3, and my D file got a virus and is empty. I can't find it anywhere else.

Communism and demo are cool and all that, but i remember a thread that proved that the 4 turns wasted going from republic to whatever is not actually worth the shields saved (unless you are religious...)
For question number 1, does anyone actually know what a meltdown does?

I'd argue that for a warmonger intent on conquering the world, the turns in anarchy to get to communism are well worth it. The only real caveat is to make sure you have the tech you need before the switch.

Gold and tech will be down, but production will be way, way up. Plus no WW and 4 MP per city.

IIRC during an extended period of civil disorder in a city with a nuclear power plant, you re running a risk that it will melt down resulting in significant pollution. Just like Cherboyl in 1980s.

For more information, I refer you to Civilopedia in the game.

RE: Communism.

Communism in C3C is very powerful for large empires. Of course, if you're really big, you've probably already won. It's also good if you intend to fight a lot.

I use it because I take great joy in fighting corruption. On a standard map, having conquered an entire 4-civ continent (so roughly 50% of the world), using communism with courthouses, policestations and the SPHQ results in a nearly corruption-free empire.

But as someone already mentioned, Republic probably trumps both Demo and Communism unless you are religious (only 1-turn anarchy to switch).

Republic, I find, provides greater flexibility than Demo and is of course available MUCH earlier.

I tend to be a "builder" early on and do a fair amount of fighting from the mid-medieval era onward. The early transition to republic works out for me because I'm usually not carrying much of a military at that time. This allows faster research than Monarchy would (although I could imagine situations where that wouldn't be so, like with serious luxury shortages which would make the MPs under Monarchy very powerful). Later, when I have a bundle of size12 cities, the military support under republic works out nicely for a big army (3 free units per city).

Communism is surprisingly powerful. Just remember to build or rush courthouses & police stations everywhere and THEN switch. Not much use for money once you're commie.

Got spare money?

I tend to do more fighting in the ancient era, so I normally go monarchy. I rarely go to war in the industrial and modern ages, since its hard to kill then, unless a computer comes attacking me or demanding a tech for nothing, which is quite often. However, I don't like Communism population rushing, since it makes for too many civil revolts, and I normally have a lot of gold then. But then in democracy I have too much war weariness. How can you reduce it? I was not able to build the universal suffrage and cannot capture the city that built it.

Me too. In Civ2 I refuse to go communism on the principle of it ha.

However in my current epic game, my German empire is so huge and stretched out Communism is probably the best choice in the end. I plan to compare both Democracy and Communism although so I can get a better idea of how those governments work.

I'd like to read that thread, because for me, the main advantage - and probably the only reason to switch - of demo over republic is the faster workers.
I want to be demo by the time of RR and industrialization. Laying railroad and cleaning pollution fast seems well 4 turns worth to me.
