A word on military: catapults can be very useful in some circumstances, and are an absolute liability in others. Basically, if you have enough military to defeat a given enemy anyway, then adding catapults to your force means that you suffer fewer losses. If the victory is in doubt, you're better off spending shields on conventional troops, since catapults (as opposed to Med Inf or Knights) reduce your chances of winning. It's a lot like the effect of fast movers. The effect of retreat is to lower you chances of dying, but also lowers your chances of winning, though to a lesser degree. As long as you have enough units to pretty much guarantee the kill anyway, that's a good thing. But if you're in a 'take that city this turn at any cost' situation, retreat makes your overall chances worse.
The comparison between fast movers and catapults isn't exact - there are significant differences obviously, but the basic idea is the same.
