I have to admit, there is one rts game that is entitled to be called strategy.

Harpoon.

and this thread has led me to request again...

can i get suggestions for the best ever TBS games? i know the civ series is THE ULTIMATE, but there have to be some others out there that are worth trying...

help me here people... CIV is great, but i would like some variety every now and then.

Well, Jimmy Liu, if simultaneous non-incremental movement is the only criterion for realism then you'd be right.

the3.14rt,
I still enjoy a good game of Warlords II. Of course Warlords III is RTS… #@$%* traitors! There's always MOO2, which is only sorta Civ-like. I have been looking for a good TBS genre. My brother really enjoys HOMM IV; I played it once but it just didn't grab me.

Real time please! The one (and only) thing I hate about CIV MP is spending 6 hours playing and getting in maybe 20 turns. BORING!!

I want to try some of the games I've starting threads on in this forum. I want to try some teamwork type stuff.

For what its worth, after (as well as?) Civ, I am currently playing MM7 having finally finished MM6 - yes both in turn based mode - and I have Fallout 2 on the back burner - as an avid RPGer I also have Baldur's Gate running, but that can be too real time on occasion.

Goofydrew - we old timers (I'm 52) need to stick together!

Gee, I didn't know this forum existed. To answer my buddy war4's question - TBS without a doubt. I have played AoK and just recently 1602 and really don't like these newer RTS games at all. Actually, some of my favorite games of all time are somewhat RTS - SimCity, Railroad Tycoon (I and II) and Pirates. But those are the old style RTS, much better to play than these video-style games.

Suffering from ads?

ghen...

i tried CTP... unfortunately, i paid good money for it... i think it sucked... and i have all the CIV mods... fun, but, i need a new look! thanks.

hey Gits...

what is MM7?

yeah Gits, we olders do have to stick... or it will all be taken over by the youngsters and their cravings for shoot-em ups!!! and more types of armament... and more more! and more is the pity when you try to over-tweak a classic.

war4ever...

i almost agree...

for me it is...

plot...think...replot...pee...grab brew...do...before you rethink and get caught in an endless loop of paralysis by analysis...

the3.14rt

oh yeah... what is AOK?

Finally after much confusion
MM7 = Might & Magic 7 (not everyone's cup of tea, but I have played this series religiously from MM2 onwards and loved every minute)

War4: Here's list of TBS that I still play (besides CivII):
Conquest of the New World
Battleground: Gettysburg
Battleground: Antietam
Battleground: Bull Run
Battleground: Shiloh
Battleground: Chickamauga
West Front (just got it)
Risk
Gangsters (hybrid TBS/RTS)
Interactive Magic's American Civil War

and, I just heard of new game being released by HPS (www.wargame.ch - check this site out) called Campaign 1776. This is the first tactical-level Revolutionary War wargame that I've heard about. It was developed by the same guy who did the Battleground Series for TalonSoft.

There's probably more, but that's all I can think of.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Real-time strategy is an oxymoron, like military intelligence and government worker. My 10 year old son likes them, (Command & Conquer) he's a little bit ADD. But he also likes CIV2.

Seriously, strategy means thinking hard. Not guessing and clicking fast.

The only strategy in RT is what you plan to do before you start. The rest is tactics and reaction. Not that there's anything WRONG with that...

By the way, what is the current score?

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Obviously the faster the game goes the harder you have to think about everything, if you play against the computer in a RTS game then of course its easy to win, but if you play against a good human then you have to think very hard and very fast to be on par.
