Well, normally I wouldn't be producing workers, but I confess to taking advantage of the AI workers by buying them in my own game.

Looks good to me, except I'm wondering if we should build a garrison unit in each of the new cities before a baracks.

Oh, as for science, the bigest way at this point is to use any Legionary I that's not needed elsewhere building roads in the worked tiles in Italy, particularly near Rome. And also using the workers to mine that Olive Oil in Hills.

For speedier transportation, we also need to get some roads that don't cross rivers.

4 Citizens are ready and they will be turned into cities, as only one Senator proposed adding them. 3 Citizens can be settled on the very first turn. I plan to build at :

  • Neapolis 333 to fill in the spot, has Irrigated Wheat to grow fast and produce Workers for the southern empire,
  • Padua 447 to use the huge food surpulus around Padua right from the start,
  • Padua 9996 (or on second turn either Padua 888 or Padua 999998) to start setting up the first of three cities that can use the Wheat at Padua 9998 to grow.

[edit]
After considering, I'd put a city at Padua 99996, not Padua 9996. It would be on the second turn, then. With this setup, we could have a nice spot to settle at Padua 66 as well.

city spots II - using the 4 citizens Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

I agree on settling at Neopolis 333
Furthermore, if not suggested earlier Rome 66

On the northern side of our empire I see there are several options. Modo's 447 from Padua gave me the hint to settle at 44 from Padua, as there is indeed a humungous amount of potential food there, which Padua can't use efficiently all by itself for centuries. This leaves several options for later city settlements.

I had a look at the 99996+66 (later city) from Padua suggestion, but I would opt for 9999+6669 from Padua, which seem more efficient to me and have more access to food from the start.

I'd sure like to see screen shots when discussing new city locations.

Yes, found new cities with them, and I'd like them all to be located such that as many of them as possible are founded along a river so they haves free aquaducts.

McMeadows, the location at Padua 6669 has very small food potential early on. It would require a Harbor straight away in order to grow. And it would require an Aqueduct to grow bigger than size 6. In my opinion, better spots can be used.

And Padua 9999 does a bad thing too - it takes away a fertile place that could feed more miners.

Remember that we are not in Despotism and we can use Irrigation effectively. Then you'll see why I tried to plan the cities on hills rather than on Grassland tiles.

I propose to put cities at Padua 888, 99988 and 99996. This way all of them would have access to the Wheat tile, there would be plenty of additional Grassland to Irrigate for the cities and they would all have access to fresh water.

I agree that Padua 44 is a good location to take advantage of the local food surpulus.

I also agree with Rome 66.

Here's the view of Padua and surroundings for easier reference:

I must confess, I've been playing civ3 for years and still don't understand this "Rome 66" type notation. Would someone please explain it to me? Like, is it the same as the numers on a numpad.....8 is north, 4 is west, etc? Or something else?

Exactly what you have said.

8 is north,
6 is east,
2 is south,
4 is west.

They are simply moves you would make with the Numpad when moving the unit. The difference is, we're talking about positions here. So the shortes path is given, not always with allowed moves. "Rome 66" means two tiles east of Rome.

I like Roma 6-6,
like Padua 4-4,
and love Padua 8-8-8

Don't like Pauda 9-9-9-8-8, [no free aquaduct]
hate Paudua 9-9-9-9 [no free aquaduct and too close to other city sites I like]
Don't like Pauda 9-9-9-9-6 [no free aquaduct]

I'd also love either Roma 8-7-7-7 or Roma 8-7-7-7-7
The second goes better with Pauda 4-4 would lose us a forest-chop. (I hope everyone has played RoR as Rome at least one turn so I didn't spoil anything.)

It does have fresh water. Just loaded the save and checked the tile to be sure. It can produce 1 gold without a road, hence it borders a River (just barely to be seen in the fog).

I'm attaching a view of the southern Empire. A city at Neapolis 333 owns the Irrigated Wheat tile, so it could provide us with Workers and then grow quickly. Plus it fits a CxxC pattern. The drawback - no free Aqueduct.

A city at Neapolis 998 would work well with another one at Rome 669 instead of Rome 66.

Just so you know - this and the previous screenie were taken with default build queues, before changing anything.

Roma 6-6-9 is also a good city spot, in my own game around turns 30 - 35 I infilled in Italy at
1. Roma 6-6-9
2. Neapolis 3-3-3
3. Croton 6-9 [mostly to get rid of the Greek influence in Italy.]

I don't like Neapolis 9-9-9 in conjuction with a new city from Roma in the area.

I considered but rejected Messana 6-9 and mined this grassland with shield tile instead for Messana to use.
